The re-mastered album sounds superb.

Becoming increasingly displeased with the direction that Mick Jones was taking Foreigner in with ‘Agent Provocateur’, singer Lou Gramm put out his first solo album ‘Ready Or Not’ in 1987, its success and sales of the single ‘Midnight Blue’ further souring the relationship between the legendary band’s two leading figures. After returning to the Foreigner fold for ‘Inside Information’, the disappointing sales led to this second solo album in 1989, on which Gramm was again joined by the legendary Nils Lofgren on guitar, fellow ex-Black Sheep bassist Bruce Turgon and Gramm’s brother Ben on drums, as well as a couple of guest guitarists well-known within the genre.

Expertly produced by keyboard player Peter Wolf – who I’m amazed to discover from the sleeve notes is German, and not the guy from the J. Geils Band I previously thought – ‘Long Hard Look’ is another radio-friendly release along the lines of classic Foreigner. The Gramm/ Holly Knight-penned hit single ‘Just Between You And Me’ is as good as anything by Foreigner from the same period, whilst Dann Huff adds his considerable guitar prowess to the gritty opener ‘Angel With A Dirty Face’, the Foreigner-esque ‘I'll Come Running’ and the drum-driven ‘I’ll Know When It’s Over’. There are other genres creeping into the Funky ‘Broken Dreams’, the Poppy ‘True Blue Love’ and the faithful version of the Small Faces hit ‘Tin Soldier’, whilst the inimitable Pino Palladino lends his fretless bass to the atmospheric, slow-burner ‘Warmest Rising Sun’. Most tellingly are the Hard Rocking ‘Hangin’ On My Hip’ and contagious ‘Day One’, both of which feature the fret-board wizardry of Dio, Whitesnake and future Def Leppard star Vivian Campbell; a recommendation of producer Wolf who would gel so well with main writers Gramm and Turgon that the trio would go on to form Shadow King when Gramm refused to go back to Foreigner.

The re-mastered album sounds superb and Paul Suter’s sleeve interview with Gramm tells of the fine line that Atlantic had to walk in keeping both Foreigner and Gramm himself happy. A timely reminder of a very good record that will hopefully lead to the re-issue of both ‘Ready...’ and the subsequent Shadow King debut.
