A neat cross-section of Carl Palmer’s career.

This is a strange one. This compilation of Carl Palmer’s career as one of the best respected drummers on the planet was originally released back in 2001, but has now been re-issued in re-mastered and slightly altered form. I’m a fan but no expert, so I can only guess from the song lengths that some have reverted to their unedited form and others have been left off completely to accommodate the new editions and a couple of different tracks.

Disc one focuses solely on his work with Emerson Lake & Palmer, not all of which was originally released on their albums. The twenty minutes plus of ‘Concerto For Percussion’ isn’t as bad as it sounds and has a full orchestra, some great tuned percussion by Palmer and a co-write by Joseph Horowitz. There are a lot of cool bits and I would go as far as to say it’s the main reason for buying this. ‘Concerto...’ was originally written for ‘Works Volume 1’ but wasn’t used, which is a shame as it would have been one of the better tracks. This time out Palmer has left off ‘The Pancha Suite’ to include different versions of ‘The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits’ and ‘Bullfrog’, whilst ‘Tank’ is the re-recorded version and not the original. ‘March Militaire’ is a short piece that was unreleased but hardly essential and the rest are taken mostly from Palmer’s side of ‘Works’, plus ‘Toccata’, ‘Close But Not Touching’ and ‘Canaria’.

Disc two is the more interesting of the two, featuring one track by Palmer’s first band The Craig when he was fifteen, the Who-like ‘I Must Be Mad’, Atomic Rooster’s ‘Decline And Fall’ (complete with drum solo) and one from his sole PM album; the New Wave Pop of ‘You’ve Got Me Rockin’’ sounds for all the world like The Cars. The short instrumental ‘Mount Teidi’ comes from Mike Oldfield’s ‘Five Miles Out’ and Asia are represented by three of their most popular songs, ‘Heat Of The Moment’, ‘Wildest Dreams’ and ‘Time Again’. A personal favourite has always been his ELP-lite project with Keith Emerson and Robert Berry in 3, with the awesome ‘Desda La Vida’ and their version of ‘Eight Miles High’. The disc ends with the excellent Jazz workout ‘Shawnee’ with the Buddy Rich Orchestra. The biggest changes here are he’s dropped a track each by The Craig, PM and Mike Oldfield, the sole song by The Chants and Qango’s version of ‘Hoedown’ to include his current trio’s version of that track, along with ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’ and the excellent ‘In A Moroccan Market’.

This is a neat cross-section of Carl Palmer’s career and a great way to understand his contribution to all the bands and projects he’s been involved with, but to switch around tracks on a compilation that true fans will already own seems a bit pointless to me and putting in an extra disc might have been a better alternative.
