Derringer... cocked, loaded, but one still in the chamber.

Rick Zeringher, after scoring a hit with ‘Hang On Sloopy’ at the tender age of seventeen, changed his name to Derringer (diminutive gentleman, small gun - see?) and later backed Johnny and Edgar Winter, but really wanted his own band. The feeling seems to be, even in the notes from Alan Robinson, that they never really made it on disc, but live, well that was a different matter.

And so we now have two live documents. ‘Derringer Live’ was commercially released after the second album whilst ‘Live In Cleveland’ will be the real hook for people; released in drips as a bootleg, it now has a rightful place.

There’s the rub. These are two live albums which may show the blazing fun of their stage strutting power, but both sets sound similar and the first four tracks are the same; virtually interchangeable, so why bother?

Why indeed. To an untrained ear, the sounds are roughly the same, the crowd enjoy it and the music itself is likeable, blue collar U.S. fare but things are not helped by CD1 actually being CD2 and vice versa.

‘Let Me In’ is actually rabble rousing, Punky fun fare, easy to sing and enjoy, whilst ‘Sailors’ has a rolling, simple feeling with a blazing solo. And this is one of the features, Derringer’s big guitar work that sometimes leans towards wankery but is always an event – he even throws in a bit of The Kinks at the end of one version of ‘Rock And Roll, Hootchie Koo’ which is pristine and if that is your drug of choice, get well here.

‘Sitting By The Pool’ has contemplation amongst the heat and some strumming; it’s not just an attack, he keeps it tight too and doesn’t let his talent rush out. ‘Uncomplicated’ is nothing really and yet the crowd love it, ‘Still Alive And Well’ has a bit of that Funky Blues and is much the better for it.

Uncomplicated, bratty, fun loving; this is quintessential U.S. Radio Rock, if there is such a thing... except it’s not on the radio. Those who follow Rick Derringer will love this; those who don’t might frown but may well smile when those thick licks start, for one album anyway.

Derringer... cocked, loaded, but one still in the chamber.
