If you are a Heavy Metal / Doro fan who hasn’t got the original, then you should certainly “raise your fist” and reach out for a copy.

These days Doro is often referred to simply, fondly and rightfully, by fans and journalists alike, as The German Queen Of Heavy Metal out of both respect and admiration for her career as well as her contribution and dedication to Metal. She recently reached her 30th Anniversary and chose to celebrate this landmark in a few ways, including two guest-filled concerts in her hometown of Dusseldorf followed by a small European Tour afterwards.

In addition to these events, Doro has also chosen to mark the occasion with another release. There will be many who would expect some form of “Best Of” compilation but she’s already released two of those since 2010. So instead the decision was made to re-issue one of her previous records and ‘Raise Your Fist’ was chosen. To some this may seem a slightly questionable choice given the original album was only released two years ago but when you take into account it was one of her best received albums as well as Doro herself regarding it as one of her best and favourites, it is one of the logical choices.

The re-issue package comes in two parts; the first half is the ‘Raise...’ album itself which readers may remember I reviewed back in issue #54. It gave us some cracking tracks including some of my Doro favourites in ‘Revenge’ with its immense riff and the thundering anthemic title track ‘Raise Your Fist In The Air’. There was also a couple of guest appearances including Gus G (Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne) shredding away on ‘Grab The Bull’ whilst Doro duetted with legendary Motorhead front-man and great friend Lemmy Kilmister on ‘It Still Hurts’. You also can’t talk about this album without mentioning the touching and emotional ballad ‘Hero’ which was written about Doro’s other great friend, the late Ronnie James Dio. When I reviewed it, I originally found ‘Raise...’ to be a “classy” and “stand out” Heavy Metal album and it’s an opinion I continue to maintain.

Many would be simply satisfied with adding some bonus material and conclude “job done”. But Doro has gone to the extent of adding a whole separate disc entitled ‘Passionate Personal Favourites’. This disc is mostly made up of cover versions of acts or songs that have been important to Doro over her career (see the interview elsewhere in this issue) as well as a couple of other unique offerings. The covers include ‘Babe I’m Gonna Leave You’ (Led Zepplin), ‘Nutbush City Limits’ (Ike & Tina Turner), ‘Only You’ (Kiss) ‘Nothing Else Matters’ (Metallica) and ‘Egypt (The Chains Are On) (Dio). Other selections include a French version of ‘Raise...’, a Jacob Hansen re-mix of ‘...Hurts’, a favourite demo of Doro’s in ‘N.Y.C. Blues’ and ‘Warfare’ which comes from the movie ‘Anuk III’ which features Doro herself. It also comes with a bonus video of behind the scenes footage from the ‘Raise...’ recordings. There is a limited edition super box-set that includes the albums, a wall clock, bracelet, patch, autographed card, car-sticker and a surprise; having seen it in the flesh at a gig, it does look rather fantastic.

The big question is, with it being a recently released re-issue, whether this is worthy of purchase? The box-set itself is quite delicious and if you can afford the expenditure then the added extras make it more than worth it. I also feel, given you effectively get a complete disc of extras, that the “basic” two disc edition is just as worthy of consideration; you do get a cracking recent Doro album combined with a full disc of quality, unreleased material. If you’re a Doro fan and have the original release, it might take some consideration but it’s still deserving of your money. If you are a Heavy Metal/Doro fan who hasn’t got the original, then you should certainly “raise your fist” and reach out for a copy.
