Micki Free will give your day a fresh burst of positive energy and may quite possibly remind you why you love guitar music so much.

Micki Free seems to be one of those people who has been knocking about for what seems forever, and may be known to Fireworks and Rocktopia readers as one of the founding members of Crown Of Thorns, writing the debut (and classic) album with Jean Beauvior. Also a part of Shalamar in the 1980s, Free is known nowadays for being a kick ass bluesman and proud Native American.

Even if you have only a passing interest in Blues rock (like me) it’s very hard not to get into ‘American Horse‘, as it contains some of the most amazing guitar you’re likely to hear all year. Think of Micki Free as a cross between Santana and Hendrix and you’ll start to get the idea. Okay, so this seems overly praiseworthy, but I can’t think of a better way to put it. It helps that at the end of the album there’s a 17 minute mega guitar wibble called ‘Voodoo Chile Blues‘, which compliments ‘Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)’ earlier on the album, which takes Hendrix‘s original and mucks about with it a bit.. Hendrix may be sacred to some, but when he’s played with this much style it’s easier to just jump aboard and enjoy the ride. It’s hard to do anything really original in the hardcore Blues genre, but I have found that the really good ones stand out (see Joe Bonamassa), and Micki Free certainly falls into that category. When he lets rip into a solo (and he does this a lot) it’s all you can do not to bring out the old air guitar and gurn like a pro. The songs range from old time down South man-on-the-porch blues (‘Angels In The Room’) to full tilt rock (‘New York, New York’), and every song is stuffed full of passion.

Not just for guitarists to slobber over, Micki Free will give your day a fresh burst of positive energy and may quite possibly remind you why you love guitar music so much. Now excuse me, I have to go and have another go on my air guitar…
