One of the most original progressive releases for the last 10 years.

When handed this latest offering from progressive outfit the Pineapple Thief (could they be anything other than prog with a name like that!), it was with a sense of anticipation, having first encountered their work on 2008’s rather excellent ‘Tightly Unwound.’

By way of an introduction, the Pineapple Thief – led by singer/songwriter Bruce Soord - have been quietly establishing themselves on the circuit for the last 10 years, with a steady flow of album releases during that time, the most prominent being ‘Tightly,’ which helped launch the Kscope label.

But whilst ‘Tightly’ gave a strong indication of what the band were capable of, ‘Someone Here is Missing’ exceeds expectations – nine slices of near musical perfection and with a delightfully odd cover design from Storm Thorgerson of Pink Floyd/Thunder/Muse/Biffy Clyro (to name but a few) fame.

Track one ‘Nothing at Best’ is one of the finest openers I’ve heard for quite some time. Unmistakably progressive, but not - a much needed modern slant on a classic genre. Follow-up ‘The State We’re In’ is nothing short of phenomenal. A track that builds into a multi-layered masterpiece and for me, album highlight.

A tip of the hat to Radiohead on ‘Preparation for Meltdown,’ which builds into the equivalent of a sonic shower, dousing the listener with a beautiful variation of sound, structure and style. Which can be said for pretty much all of SHIM. ‘Barely Breathing’ floats along, before ‘Show A Little Love’ reignites proceedings with a driving bass, interspersed with Orbital influenced keyboards.

The title track is another standout moment – though on an album of this quality, you could argue there are nine of them – followed by the deceptively intense ‘3,000 Days,’ which draws comparisons with those other modern progressive pioneers Porcupine Tree. Album closer ‘So We Row’ is the obligatory eight minute ‘epic,’ which no self respecting progressive release should be without – a fitting end to a consistently excellent effort.

‘Someone Here is Missing,’ like the best albums in your collection, is effortless. One of the most original progressive releases for the last 10 years, in SHIM the Pineapple Thief have staked their claim as a leading standard bearer for the future of the progressive movement. Rest assured, on this evidence the future’s in very safe hands indeed.
