An unbelievable, head tuning Progressive Metal release.

Those who know me best know of my affinity to purchase an album based solely on the artwork, song names, or even on a whim wondering what a band with such a name sounds like. Scoff at me they sometimes do, but when I am able to show them a band such as the one we are about to talk about here, it is me who gets the last laugh. So…. ha-ha, bite me!

Such was the case when I purchased this, ‘A Frail Deception’, the debut from Greece based Psycrence; and what a great choice I made, for this was money well spent. The incredible keyboard work, the chugging power chords, the lush melodies, the overall heaviness, and the vocal harmonies, all of which are what give these tracks depth, passion and melody. It is a great thing when a band can play with such vigor on one track (‘Moral Decay’), then on the next showcase the ability to put touches of the downfallen and morose (‘Hold Close The Flame). With the Progressive heaviness of the exceptional Serenity, the heavy guitars of Sandalinas, and the lushness of the always amazing Seven Kingdoms, Psycrence comes across as sheer Progressive Metal faultlessness.

The songs come across as tight, with every inch of every musical bar used to its fullest; the song-writer taking full advantage of the short time of a musical bar to add another layer of notes, more layers of guitars, a keyboard to fill in a certain spot, and the bass and drums added in where needed. It is safe to say the songs are crafted much like a house is built. The foundation of bass and drums, the guitars and keyboards contain the music within a certain space, much like the walls, and the voices add that cover, so together the music comes across all nicely fit within said musical bars. Because of that, just praise is given, for these songs are amazingly well written. As the final track fades away, the listener is left breathless and feels like he has just had his Metal ass kicked.  And what happens then is a new favourite band is made.

Brace yourself, and listen to the simply fantastic ‘Reflection’, the layered guitars of ‘Subconscious Eyes’, the incredible bass that is heard on ‘Distance’, the drums of ‘Forced Evolution’ and the synthesizers and piano are just jaw dropping on the closing track ‘Lights.’

What a solid release this is. In perfect doses, all the instruments bombard their way toward the listener, hell bent on filling his heart, mind and soul with a collection of Progressive Metal that needs to be heard. In summary, this is an unbelievable, head tuning Progressive Metal release.
