A timeless collection from a timeless master musician.

When you have this much music in your soul, it should not be a surprise that an artist looks back over the years, and reaches in for some creations from an era gone past – realises their potential and re-records them! That is just what Lars Eric Mattsson has done with this, his twenty-forth release entitled ‘Hot And Able 1983-85’!

This record is a collection of early Mattsson compositions that haven’t really seen the light of day, other than live performances when he was touring with his early band Joe Cool. Although re-recorded, each piece stays true to the original intent and arrangement. They also display just how advanced a guitar player and composer Mattsson was – remember this was in the early eighties! Yes, he has updated these rivers of music, mostly adding the vocals himself (they were first performed by a female vocalist) and some of the lyrics were modified slightly. All in all, ‘Hot...’ retains the original structure of each song.

In addition to Mattsson’s razor sharp voice, he plays bass and guitar on this release and has drummer Christer Jansson and organist Alexander King performing alongside; upon listening, one will hear his early influences. The talent of the man and the creativity of this artist is unbelievable when we think that these sixteen tracks represent his first forays into composing modern music! The interplay between the Hammond Organ and his guitar is simply extraordinary!  Then, there is that fusion of Jazz and Hard Blues which, in some expressions, just elevates the song to the highest level, and some all out Rockers are also present! As one journeys through this fine collection, one will realise just how much ahead of his time Mattsson was and still is! I can only imagine what it was like to see him perform these pieces; your eyes wouldn’t move off of him…and the sounds that he brought forth – simply another amazing aspect!

Although ‘Hot...’ is collection of compositions from the early eighties, the production is stellar due to Mattsson recording them earlier this year and one can hear the loving hands that went in to producing this release. The interplay between him and Alexander’s Hammond brings forth visions of Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord; mind you, no copying, just the same atmosphere. Some of the pieces groove along, and are fuelled by Mattsson’s Blues interpretations – making for a good romp through some straight-up Rock!

‘Hot And Able 1983-85’ is a timeless collection from a timeless master musician – a journey from Hard Blues to Progressive Jazz fused Rock and only performed by the likes of Lars Eric Mattsson!
