A glorious, classy fusion of AOR styles.

Intelligent Music was established by Dr. Milen Vrabevski, musical producer, composer and patron of the arts, in continuation of the Bulgarian Memory Foundation programme for preservation and popularisation of the Bulgarian Cultural Heritage.

‘My Kind O’ Lovin’’ is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Intelligent Music Project I ‘The Power of Mind’.  This concept album was written and produced by Vrabevski and his view of life and one which many people both share and aspire to living; love, friendship, no prejudice and waking up each day knowing that it is going to be great. The writer has put this all together in a cornucopia of melodic musical styles ranging from Progressive to Country, from West Coast to Rock. The musicians, talented beyond belief, are mostly Bulgarians with the exception of ex-Toto drummer Simon Phillips, ex-Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton (who featured on the IMP I album) and current Toto singer Joseph Williams.

The album starts very quietly with the sounds of waves gently lapping against the shore introducing the laid-back title track ‘My Kind Of Lovin’’. The second track in ‘Friends’ is the first of four to feature the Toto’s brilliant vocalist Williams and is another laid back AOR number with the first of many superb guitar solos by Plamen Chepanov.

‘No One Can Deny It’ is the first track to have a Rock back bone and is a real gem with Lawton’s vocals being especially impressive. ‘Get Into Real’ is the closest that Williams comes to sounding like he is singing for Toto. ‘Simple Game’ is a beautiful ballad and ‘Happiness’ (Williams’ vocals) has a Latin feel with more superb guitar work that is delightfully understated.

If anything, the second half of the album gets even better, starting with the theatrical ‘Things We Can’t Do’ that takes a Progressive upbeat heading towards the end of the song. ‘Time To Move Along’ is more traditional Melodic Rock and one of my favourite songs on the album. ‘People On Fire’ has fast chorus juxtaposed to the slow verses that are underpinned with more luscious guitars and occasional string section. You will be hard pressed to hear a smoother track than the West Coast of ‘Step In Learnin’’ with Williams at his absolute best. Penultimate track, ‘Understand The Morning’ has a mid-West Country vibe and ‘Conclusion’ just throws everything into the pot and even includes brief piano, synth, drum and bass solos.
‘My Kind O’ Lovin’ is possibly the most cerebral album that I have ever heard, yet despite this claim it is not pretentious in any shape or form but just a glorious, classy fusion of AOR styles.
