If you can get past the German language, then you might find that Unherz are a band worth investigating.

I remember getting a tape sent to me in 1985 by a Punk Rocker friend of mine after I’d moved back to England and it was by the very Germanic Punk band Boehse Onkelz. That was the first name that came into my head when I started playing this album, particularly when I heard ‘Pogobraut’ (loosely ‘Pogo Bride’) and ‘Viva Rock ‘N’ Roll’ (self-explanatory or selbsterklaerend). ‘Pogobraut’ is a party song made for festivals that has BO written all over it style-wise. I’m guessing it’s BO who? The closest comparison I can come up with is the Pop Punk of Green Day after they’ve had a few beers and been out in the midday sun for a while – a rather joyous romp with sing-along “la, la, la’s”; ‘Viva...’, likewise, is Germanic BO sounding Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Now you may say what has any of this got to do with Melodic Rock? Well, surprisingly, despite their Punk leanings and attitude, they have plenty of Melodic Rock songs up their metaphorical sleeves.

‘Der Fur Dich’ (Him For You) follows straight on from the keyboard heavy intro and features nice sonic melodies interspersed amongst the pretty fast beat with an impassioned melodic chorus and plenty of “whoas” to finish. Vocalist/guitarist Felix Orschel and fellow guitarist/backing vocalist Andy Arnold prove they have a nice ear for melody on ‘Zeugen Der Zeit’ (Witnesses Of Time) and punctuate the song with nice stabbing riffs. Bassist Jochen Wallauer and drummer Christian Bogert hold the rhythm all nicely together and another slice of melody is created with the passionate driving Rocker ‘Drei Kreuze’ (Three Crosses).

‘Ein Lied Fur Unsere Feinde’ (A Song For Our Enemies) is a pacy Rocker, again with oodles of melody swimming around and they prove they can also do the Rock ballad some justice with ‘Der Erste Schritt’ (The First Step) showing a mature, balanced nature with a somewhat epic feel and a pleasing solo.

As befits their Punk heritage though, ‘Wir Sind Hier’ (We Are Here) is as anthemic as the title suggests on the chorus and is a another up-tempo Rocker to boot and the anthemic, punchy nature is also evident on ‘Krieger Des Lebens’ (Warriors Of Life) which also ends with plenty of “whoas”.

Buy the digi-pack and there are two bonus live tracks; ‘Schmerz Neu Definiert’ (Newly Defined Pain) which is a raucous Punk anthem in the style of Die Toten Hosen and ‘Seite An Seite’ (Side By Side) from ‘Die Wahrheit Liegt Dazwischen’ (‘The Truth Lies In Between’) album.

If you can get past the German language, which even for me is not that easy to assimilate, then you might find that Unherz are a band worth investigating.
