A joyous slice of Heavy Rock with a dash of Pop but enriched by the Chris Laney “sound”.

One has to wonder when Chris Laney finds time to sleep so prolific is his production output, and it’s easy to forget that he is a song-writer and performer in his own right. Technically I guess this is his ‘third’ album following the acclaimed ‘Pure’ and ‘Only Come Out At Night’; this self-titled offering, ‘Laney’s Legion’, differs in that it’s actually a band (as opposed to a direct “solo” album) made up of Danger Danger’s Rob Marcello on guitar/vocals, Mats Vassfjord (Grand Design and Impera) on bass/vocals and Patrik Jansson on drums. “I really missed the feeling of having a band, I wanted to get back to basics” says Laney, “This time it’s all about the songs” and he and long-time partner Anders Ringman have written an album of very fine songs indeed.

If you’re a fan of the first two, you won’t be disappointed with ‘Laney’s...’; opening with ‘On & On’ it reassures you that this is most definitely the Laney “sound”. ‘Taste Of Your Tongue’ will forever remain in my heart for managing to get away with the immortal line “but how can I resist you when your panties hit the floor”. ‘Poptastic’ is a catchy slice of Pop kitsch that celebrates the joy of the 1980s MTV glory days whilst ‘Beneath The Surface’ is a slice of heavy, riffy Rock driven by the rhythm section and accented with Marcello’s fine guitar solo.

Ballads on albums frequently irritate me as (for me) they can change the album’s flow too much but the opening banjo on ‘Bleed Within’ sets it apart; it shouldn’t work but it does and is possibly my favourite track. ‘Let’s Get It On’ oozes out of the speakers like chocolate – the songs never lose pace or get distracted by lengthy solos, Marcello comes in like a ninja, assaults your ears for a few seconds and then disappears back – and the solo in this and ‘Hollow’ are good examples of this tactic. ‘Lady Luck’ (co-written by ex-Tigertailz front-man Steevi Jaimz) is full of punch and heavy groove, ‘Assassin Of Our Love’ soars and swoops and ‘No One Can Stop Us’ is another riff filled offering. Final track ‘Legion’ is a slice of anthemic Heavy Rock punctuated by a guitar solo with more than a touch of Yngwie Malmsteen about it.

‘Laney’s Legion’ is a joyous slice of Heavy Rock with a dash of Pop but enriched by the Chris Laney “sound”; take time to listen to the components and you’ll realise how rich and complex the production is. It’s an album that everyone should own for those moments when you just want a piece of classy, riffy Rock to brighten your day or energise your drive.
