A must buy for lovers of the heavier stuff.

Mastodon first came to my attention with their 2004 'Leviathan' album; the heavy uncompromising riffs and sheer quality of the songs on that release was something that appealed to me and I've been a fan of the band ever since. Forward now to 2014 and we find Mastodon returning to the music scene with the majestic brutality of 'Once More 'Round The Sun', an album that takes no prisoners with its hard-nosed approach to Rock music. The riffs that are prevalent throughout the album blister your skin with their intensity and the pounding drums and bass threaten to deafen you and shake the glass from your window panes when you play the album LOUD. Yet what is still amazing about this band and its music is the fact that as heavy as the songs are, they are also so good; that their intense, dramatic and of course overblown nature works so well that when you're listening to 'Once...' you seem to lose yourself completely in the album's musical splendour.

Give 'Tread Lightly', 'High Road' (with its riff that Black Sabbath would have loved to have written), 'Chimes At Midnight', the monster Rockfest of 'Asleep In The Deep', 'Halloween' and the astonishingly complex epic that is 'Diamond In The Witch House' a few minutes of your time and soon you'll discover for yourself, one of the great Metal bands working today. I must also give a massive thumbs up to two other people, firstly Nick Raskulinecz (Rush/Alice In Chains) whose production has made this whole album sound truly amazing and a joy to listen to, and secondly to cover artist Skinner whose weird Chinese/India influenced Psychedelic cover art brings another element of quality to the whole 'Once...' package.

As bands and their music go, Mastodon are heavy (H) but they temper this with great melodies and musicianship that is second to none and 'Once More Round The Sun' is another feather in their collective caps. Another winner from messers Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor... the gentlemen from Atlanta, Georgia known as Mastodon; and a must buy for lovers of the heavier stuff.
