I think that fans of SyX, Fates Warning and Savatage will really enjoy this release.

False Coda were formed in Salamina, Greece, back in 2009 by the Milios brothers, Vasilis and Andrew on guitar and drums respectively. Their line-up is completed by Manos Xanthakis (ex-Agnosia, ex-Jericho, ex-Blazon, ex-Celestial Ode) on vocals, Nikos Pogkas on bass and Lefteris Kapetanious on keyboards. Following years of playing live in the Athens area, FC are finally going to release their debut album 'Close To The Edge'. The production, handled by the band themselves, is very good and the album has been mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Sympony X).

From the first ninety seconds of opening track 'Simple Rules', I was half expecting Queensr├┐che to burst from the speakers, however, twenty seconds later it was clear that FC are a Progressive Metal band who are clearly influenced by the mighty Dream Theater (circa 'Scenes From A Memory'/'Systematic Chaos'). Strangely, the opening number is an instrumental and debatably the best song on the album. 'Code Of Kindness' sees the introduction of vocals. I have to say, as only an occasional listener to Progressive Metal, I have struggled a little with Xanthakis' singing which is more a personal preference than a criticism as he sings clearly and with little detection of an accent. I think that my issue here is that with the music being this good, I was expecting a singer in the class of James LaBrie (DT) or Russell Allen (Symphony X) and the latter is a bit unfair. The dissonance between vocals and instruments is most evident on 'Picture', however, the title track 'Closer To The Edge' is more melodic and with the vocals, in a lower register, somewhat improved to my ears.

'Room Of Pain' is another intense number, however, I personally think that the album works best with the songs that have a change of pace like 'Respect' and album closer 'Blood On Eyes', the latter being, arguably, the most commercial track on the album and where I would personally like to see them progress on their next album.

This is a very creditable debut that certainly highlights the talents of guitarist Vasilis Milios and his great interaction with keyboard player Kapetanious, plus the band's ability to write heavy, Progressive, melodic songs. I think that fans of SyX, Fates Warning and Savatage will really enjoy this release.
