A gentle album that's easy on the ear.

'Children Of The Cosmos' is a pleasant, pleasing and well-intentioned solo album from original Curved Air violinist and founder member Darryl Way. In fact, it's his first Rock album for over twenty years and, in inspiration both lyrically and musically, it stretches back further than that.

That's not to say that it's anachronistic or that Way has nothing to offer the present – but it does tie modern production and fresh songs to his late 1960s/early 1970s roots and is all the more interesting for it; in some ways it shows how little has changed. The issues that dominated youth culture back then have not gone away, and it's warming to hear Way placing his respect for the natural world and his musical past into a modern context.

The title track introduces some of the "hippy" themes that persist through the album and shows that Way has lost none of his spark, creativity or passion. Stand out tracks for me include the Eastern-tinged, name-dropping and generally Rocking 'Summer Of Love', the dreamy 'Lagan Love' (instrumental) and the classically-infused 'Sergey' (another instrumental), with Way's violin quite rightly centre stage and characteristically evocative. Also ear catching are the superb vocal performance of Rosie (surname not supplied) on 'Fire With Fire', the beautiful melody of 'A Winter's Tale' and the integration of 'Pachelbel's Canon' with the Cod Reggae rhythms of 'Don't Look Back'. Less appealing (to me) are the atypical sounds of 'Spooks', which are more New Wavey than New Agey and just feel a bit out of place.

There's some lovely music here. 'Children Of The Cosmos' is a gentle album that's easy on the ear. It won't Rock hard enough to please all Fireworks readers, but it will doubtless please Curved Air and Darryl Way fans, and anyone else who wants to dip back into the roots of Prog Rock and British Psychedelia while keeping one foot in the present and one eye on the future.
