They could be the new torch bearers for Christian Rock.

Don't you just love bands with a "powerful message"? Well if you do, then Sound Of Eternity are for you because that phrase crops up a lot in their promotional blah. Unfortunately, the "powerful message" is, basically, "God is awesome!" so no points for that. Lucky for them an atheist got the review job, eh?

I suppose it's a testament to the quality of this, the Italian band's debut, that I can categorically say that the fact this is a Christian band should not in any way put you off. For most of the time vocalist Beatriz Aranda could be singing to a really great boyfriend, rather than a potential higher plain being, and unlike Stryper, they really don't ram anything down your throat (metaphorically, that is).

The thing is 'Visions & Dreams' is really rather good. If you added a few violins and the like, it would pass easily for a Symphonic Rock album; such is the naturalistic flow of the songs and the ethereal quality of Aranda's voice. That's not to say this is some dull hippy album... oh no. This is a full on Melodic Rock album that has some really catchy tracks, like opener 'Call To Action' which reminds me of Treat's great track 'Paper Tiger'. The slowest track is 'Eternal Love', which to be honest is a bit of a yawn, but in general the album has plenty of crunchy guitars and good melodies. It sounds clear as a bell, too, no doubt the result of getting future legend Erik Martensson to mix and master it.

What SOE have done is make a debut album with elements that will appeal to all sorts of Rock fans, except maybe the Dark Metal lot. Less preachy than Stryper yet more modern and heavy than Petra, Sound Of Eternity look like they could be the new torch bearers for Christian Rock, praise be to Bod (and Aunt Flo etc).
