If you liked the debut from these guys then this is a good album to sit alongside it.

I reviewed The Black Rain's debut album 'Night Tales' back in March last year and remarked at what a very good band these young Italians were, showing a lot of promise from a country without a bona-fide Rock 'n' Roll history.

Fast forward a year and they've changed record labels from 'Street Symphonies' to 'Atomic Stuff' and knocked out the 'difficult' second album. Having given it a good, solid listen, it's fair to say it's more of a consolidating album than breaking down new barriers. There's at least four good songs contained on this release and they've upped the stakes with thought-provoking lyrics on many other songs.

It's good to see that musical differences haven't caused a musician merry-go-round as so often happens with new emerging bands, so the four guys that recorded '...Tales' are still present and correct – vocalist and ladies' man Mirko Greco, guitarist Eugenio Bonifazi, bassist Marco Molteni and Raffaele Marchesini still occupying the drum stool.

The melodic groover 'Shadows' opens proceedings – a tale of all-consuming near obsessive love followed by the repetitive riff of 'Mesmerize' with its anti-government, anti-war message contained within. There are a number of standard Rockers with a Blues under-current littered throughout the album – '(S)he's So Amazing' (featuring ex-Rain singer Francesco Grandi dueting with Greco) that has a delicious twist at the end ("Standing up she said "The toilet, five minutes, then join me"...then I moved to the place, man, you have to trust me, when she let her dress drop, WHAT THE HELL DID I SEE!?"), 'Brand New Shoes' (Bluesman trying to make it in San Francisco) and 'Flamenco Dancer' (Flamenco guitar intro with hand claps mid-section).

'Robert Johnson' is interesting in that it's an ode to the tragic 1930's Black American Blues singer and musician ("The 27 club is open for him, maybe where he belongs, we'll see Mississippi is burning, don't you know it, don't you know it?") and perhaps gives an inkling to one of their influences if only subtly.

The four songs where The Black Rain really get their 'groove on' are 'Rock 'n' Roll Guy' (with accompanying video) a mellow, acoustic-led mature sounding song, the driving Daughtry-esque forceful Rock of 'Times Of Trouble' with its nice use of acoustic melodies, the strong ballad 'Without Love' with keys and string programs by Rain's Antonio Olivo and the final number 'King Of Stones' – a slow burner that builds to a crescendo that not only features drums by Rain's Giacomo Calabria but has a decent bonus 'hidden' instrumental that follows on a minute later.

If you liked the debut from these guys then this is a good album to sit alongside it.
