Another Heavy Metal juggernaut that demands to be played at window-pane shacking volume.

Like their 2012 self-titled album, Kobra And The Lotus' follow-up 'High Priestess' is another Heavy Metal juggernaut that demands to be played at window-pane shacking volume. But it does differ is terms of the overall sound.

At first I couldn't explain it... all the same heaviness and fury was present, yet somehow it came across as...different... it wasn't... as vicious... maybe?? Kobra Paige confirmed that there "was a sonic difference"; you could say there has been a refinement that retains the musical maelstrom yet everything is more balanced... more accessible?

'...Priestess' explodes out the gates with the express-paced 'Warhorse' and its galloping, right side of Thrash, progression, punchy chorus and the first of many frenzied solos. 'I Am, I Am' keeps the pedal to the metal with another churning riff that suddenly goes on a rampage before the chanting, anthemic chorus which should be good live. It was the first video single and one of two songs that features ex-member Charlie Parra Del Riego as a guest; check out the finger bleeding solo!

Mid-album there is 'Hold On' where the vocals, axe work and rhythms bound along to a slower paced, wailed chorus that is one of the album's catchiest. Del Riego reappears on 'Battle Of Wraith' where the guitars grumble and growl before tearing off into the distance for the chorus and out of sight for the intense solo.

One of my three favourites is the stellar Metal offering that is the title track. The guitars, bass and drums stomp along before the chorus rears up with a cracking, classic-sounding, revolving riff and wailed vocals from Paige. 'Solider' is another highlight track which KATL have filmed a powerful video to accompany the deep lyrical content that's told by way of another bouncing riff and catchy chorus.

But of the ten tracks, my "absolute" favourite has to be 'Heartbeat'; a soaring intro gives way to a verse that sprints along, through some frantic riffing, to a chorus with a super infectious vocal melody and whining guitar; fabulous!

As an ardent enthusiast, I'm thrilled to say that 'High Priestess' is KATL' best work yet. There's plenty of Metal mayhem through the rhythms and riffs whilst melody is delivered by the soloing and vocals. Aided by the alternative approach, Kobra And The Lotus, and Paige in particular, sound superb and I maintain that she is the natural successor to Doro Pesch's throne; an opinion supported by the bands opening slot for the extensive North American Kiss/Def Leppard tour and Paige's participation in the Metal All-Stars events. Existing fans will love this whilst the new accessibility should see their reputation and fans numbers swell. This is one 'High Priestess' worthy of worship.
