We can be thankful that there is live music like this still out there to uncover.

There is no shortage of live Gary Moore albums out there. I count at least ten official ones, but it doesn't mean there isn't room for one more. Recorded live at Bush Hall in 2007, this performance was originally broadcast on Planet Rock in front of an audience who had won tickets for the event. What makes it worth investigating is that its track list relies heavily on the then recently released 'Close As You Get' album.

This gig contains no less than seven of those tracks, which were later dropped from set-lists. Moore is in full Blues Rock mode here with scant attention paid to his Rockier side; only the presence of ex-Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downes and the Bluesified version of 'Don't Believe A Word' acknowledge his Hard Rocking past. This track really adds an extra dimension to the playing, not only Moore but Downey and keyboard player Vic Martin really work up a sweat as the song comes to boiling point at its climax.

The material is a mix of Moore originals and choice Blues covers. Those covers are songs you sense helped form the young Moore as they are songs he will have first heard in the 1960s. Starting with his straightforward 'If The Devil Made Whiskey' and the cheery hoe-down of Chuck Berry's 'Thirty Days', he gets a chance to warm up playing some neat rhythm guitar before the slow Blues of 'Trouble At Home' really starts to see the temperature rise.

The measure of a Blues man is often how well he can make his guitar cry on the slow numbers. Moore's guitar positively weeps on 'Trouble...' and it's the slower songs throughout that his talent shines. There are three tracks from his 'Still Got The Blues' album that re-invented him as a Bluesman; Johnny Guitar Watson's 'Too Tired', the crowd sing-along of 'Walking By Myself' and his own, terrific 'Still Got The Blues For You'. The only other album that is touched is 'After Hours' with the lively Little Milton cover 'The Blues Is Alright'.

The surprise closing song is the acoustic 'Sundown', a Son House cover with the lines "the sun is going down" and "you know, the Blues is a weird, old heart disease" now having an added poignancy because of his sudden death in 2011. With the man no longer around, we can be thankful that there is live music like this still out there to uncover.
