Dealing intelligently with gritty, real life issues, this is the Murderdolls' darkest offering to date.

Following an eight-year silence, America’s favourite hellraisers are back with a vengeance, unleashing black comedy and carnage by the bucket-load. Sharper and more aggressive than ever before, these glam-tinged ghouls have evolved dramatically since ‘Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls’ rocked the metal scene in 2002.

While the band’s horror-themed trademarks remain faithfully intact, their latest work adds blood-smeared flesh to the barebones of their now-distant debut. Spawned from the unholy union of Slipknot’s Joey Jordison and gothic icon Wednesday 13, ‘Women And Children Last’ is an inevitable recipe for success. Having left the Murderdolls to mature for the better part of a decade, the duo’s putrid sound is now ripe with sophisticated songwriting and heavy material. Most particularly, Jordison’s groundbreaking work with Slipknot injects fresh venom into the project with machinegun-like rhythm sections and crushing bass.

But there’s also no shortage of infectious glam rock, which is cleverly reworked into an ultramodern, ferocious formula. Combining rock ’n’ roll excess with the horror genre, ‘Drug Me To Hell’ demonstrates the Murderdolls’ newfound maturity, as Wednesday swaps his much-loved Hollywood monsters for deeply personal lyricism. Presenting sing-along choruses topped with guest appearances from Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars, the album’s more playful content provides essential comic relief alongside its sober moments. ‘My Dark Place Alone’ is, however, stripped of any such breezy, oftentimes predictable rock, opening on a complex exercise in speed. Selected as a forthcoming single release, this haunting track will no doubt bewitch listeners with its angry guitars and bloodcurdling screams. Buzzing like a cloud of angry insects, Jordison’s distorted axemanship is the stuff of elaborate nightmares.

Although the Murderdolls continue to toy with spooky themes and witty storytelling, ‘Women And Children Last’ deals intelligently with gritty, real life issues, creating their darkest offering to date. Much like the perfect horror movie, the band’s 2010 outing showcases a unique blend of violence and comedy, which sees Halloween arriving considerably earlier than expected.
