Great addition to lovers of bands such as Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden.

‘Generation X’ is the second release from the outstanding Crystal Tears. Initially the band was established in the late 90’s and after three demos produced their first official release in 2006 entitled ‘Choirs of Immortal’. They then went on to make several appearances with bands such as W.A.S.P and Riot.

From the interestingly dark and mysterious cover artwork by Meran Karanitant (Six Feet Under, Hatebreed, Leave’s Eyes, Sodom), I was honestly expecting a thrash metal album and was surprised at what unfolded.

To me, listening to this album is like listening to the child that would have been created if Saxon and Magnum had got it on. With both heavy Saxon –like guitar riffs and Magnum-like vocal melodies that send shivers down your spine. In fact vocalist Ian Parry (Vengeance, Elegy, Infinity Overture, Hammerhead, André Andersen) even sounds like a cross between Bob Catley and Biff Byford which is by no means a bad thing. This album would fit in nicely with the N.W.O.B.H.M genre despite most of the band originating from Greece.

Guitarist Dimitris Goutziamanis introduces us to his heavy de-tuned chords and high speed shredding from the start on the first track entitled ‘Inner Spirit’ which sets the scene for what seems on listening to the lyrics like a concept album, intended or not I’m not sure, but it works!

‘Heroes’ to me is one of the standout tracks with beautiful vocal melodies which Ian sings with such a passion that you would be forgiven for believing every word followed by ‘Nightmare Serenade’ which entices the listener to meet a paranoid, self-tortured Jekyll & Hyde character trying to survive the world with the pain of his split personality.

Following such pain is a ray of hope with the next inspirational track ‘Empty Paradise’ reminding us that there are a lot of people worse off than us and we should be helping each other, not hating each other.

‘Rock Until We Fall’ is just what is needed after quite a bit of doom themed songs and would make a great rock anthem. This song doesn’t mess about, straight to the point and a big slap in the face to get all those sorry for themselves souls into fighting action! We also hear some surprisingly high Rob Halford style wailing....awesome.

Within ‘Flesh ‘n’ Bone’ you will find some magnificent guitar solos and harmonies with Stratos Dionisopoulos on the bass and Chrisafis Tantanozis on drums providing a seriously dirty groove.

All in all I think this would be a great addition to lovers of bands such as Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden and from what I have heard, this band are known for their outstanding live performances so catch them if you can.
