Rather than being "genre defying" as the band suggest, it fits nowhere and lacks direction.

'Modern Vintage' is the third album from Sixx:A.M., compromised of bassist Nikki Sixx, vocalist James Michael and guitarist DJ Ashba. While the previous two albums were strongly inspired by Sixx's books of the same name, '...Vintage' seems to take a wider, more general view, sometimes resulting in a lack of depth.

'Stars' is a strong catchy opener with a solid beat and the usually apocalyptic vocals without being depressing. The single 'Gotta Get It Right' was let down by the video; it was poorly acted and generally lacked charisma and impact. The song itself is heavily produced to the point of being cluttered and sounding overly commercial. Ashba lets rip on the obligatory wah-wah pedal on 'Relief' and Michael sounds more like the emotional, passionate singer of the last two albums. 'Get Ya Some' starts out interestingly, paired down (which makes a nice change on the album) but quickly becomes stuck on a loop of the chorus, broken only briefly by Ashba's guitar solo, which is unfortunately also cluttered by the production.

'Let's Go' brings back the driving Hard Rock sound and is one of the catchier tracks on the album. The production is polished, the sound heavily filled out but that doesn't necessarily detract from the song. For those who know 'Smile' from the second album, the cover of The Cars' 'Drive' is its twin sister. Ashba finally gets some spotlight time in these two tracks; his part seems unusually understated compared to the previous albums. It's just a shame about the synth sounds in the background – they don't really add anything. It's like the backing vocals on 'Give Me A Love', almost like extra padding on the sound.

'Hyperventilate' is infectiously rhythmic; Michael seems less explorative in terms of vocal range but captures the punchy rhythm well in the verses. 'Before It's Over' is a dose of light-hearted and fancy-free music. It's not in the band's character but I do quite like the contrast of Michael's straining vocals against the merry-go-round style music. Not for everyone though and it's not what I'd call a strong closer to the album.

For me it's the weakest of Sixx:A.M.'s three albums. There's a few tracks that stand out but nothing ground-breaking. Rather than being "genre defying" as the band suggest, it fits nowhere and lacks direction. Hardcore Sixx fans might lap this up but the newer and less-loyal might find it less appealing.
