Polished standard Blues with moments of real flair.

On his fourth album, New Yorker Dave Fields shows he knows a thing or two about making the Blues groovy. Like some of the best guitarists, he sculpts sounds rather than just follows notes. It's unashamedly a Blues album but with enough Rock to interest the Fireworks faithful.

The song 'Dragon Fly' stands out. It has a hypnotic vibe and abstract lyrics that demonstrate the Blues is still as relevant as ever and hasn't lost any of its mojo. 'Let's Go Downtown' sees Fields sounding like a cool Blues cat and 'Voodoo Eyes', while not startlingly original, shows off Fields' prowess as a guitarist and singer and the lolloping 'Changes In My life' demonstrates his lovely tone and tasty line in licks.

As Blues guitarists go, he's a damn fine singer too, capable of some blue-eyed soul if needed. The album was recorded mostly live in the studio and it's an occasion when this benefits the music because you can hear a band playing and it's no cut and paste production job.

The sight of two covers on the record bodes less well especially when you see they are classic Led Zeppelin and Cream (and Robert Johnson) songs. Why mess with songs that are almost impossible to top? But in Fields' skilful hands, he remoulds them enough to make them sound quite different from the source material, also proof of his confidence as a musician to take the music in a direction that suits him.

For 'Crossroad' he takes a slower, more intense route than the Cream version giving it more of the menace of the Robert Johnson original. Zep's 'Black Dog' is almost unrecognisable; the Hard Rock is ousted to make way for a Funky Blues number with Fields taking the line, "I'm gonna make you groove" and really working the life out of it.

Polished standard Blues with moments of real flair, you sense Dave Fields live would be something extra special.
