A recommendation to anyone with even a passing interest in the era they portray with such style.

For Lucifer Was, following their immense and spectacular Rock Opera 'The Crown Of Creation' was always going to be a challenge. Where to go after creating one of the most convincingly bombastic genre crossovers? The answer, it would seem, is back to basics.

The history of this Norwegian act can be traced back to the early 1970s, creating a vast unreleased catalogue which only began to surface in 1996 via the debut album 'Underground And Beyond', which consisted of ideas originally from the period between 1970-72. 'In Anadi's Bower' saw the light of day in 2000, 'Blues From Hellah', a set of recordings begun in 1982 re-worked with a string quartet in 2003. 'The Divine Tree' followed in 2007, before the grandeur that is 'The Crown Of Creation' landed four years ago.

'DiesGrows' finds LW in a remarkably different, yet similar position; mining the superb Rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s for inspiration, yet completely eschewing the strings and group voices which made 'Crown...' so memorable. Instead, other than some expert flute contributions, this is Hard Rock with a strong flavour of what first made people sit up and take notice of Deep Purple or Uriah Heep; a sprinkle of the more discordant King Crimson also revealed on occasion.

At first the "simplicity" of this seemingly huge back-step is quite a shock, especially with 'Afterlife' being not the most instant of opening choices. However the ravaging riff of 'The Devil Is The Boss Animal' throbs with such intensity that you're immediately hooked. From there 'DiesGrows' blossoms into one of the most convincing early 1970s-based Rock, with Progressive leanings, albums you could hope for; the compositions sounding from the time, rather than backwards looking in any way.

Vocalist Jon Ruder puts in an impressive performance, fragile on 'Crazy World Turns To Me' and imposing through 'Glass Shoe', whereas band mastermind and guitarist Thore Engen shines, as do the entire band, throughout.

'DiesGrows' maybe isn't the Lucifer Was album I was expecting. However it is still going to rank as one of their best and a recommendation to anyone with even a passing interest in the era they portray with such style.
