Classy in delivery with some highly impressive performances.

When it comes to retro, many bands these days opt either for the seventies style Classic Rock sound, or a more commercial Journey-ish eighties AOR delivery, so it's nice to hear a band that have re-visited the L.A. Sunset Strip sound of the mid-eighties – not the Glam/Hair Metal of Mötley Crüe, but the traditional Hard Rock/Metal that conjures up images of classic bands like Dokken, Rough Cutt, Icon and Ratt, while also tapping into other various influences along the way.

To create this sound and ensure its authenticity, FireWölfe founding member Nick Layton (guitar/keyboards) has enlisted a cast of members with numerous pedigrees who cut their teeth during the scene; David Fefolt (Angels Of Baylon, Masi, David Ellefson) on vocals, Bobby Ferkovich (Presto Ballet, Powertrain) on bass and Jay Schellen (Hurricane, Unruly Child, Badfinger, Asia) on drums. Together they have created a faithful representation of what was so enjoyable about the L.A. scene back in its heyday on 'We Rule The Night', the follow-up to 2011's self-titled debut.

Opener 'We Rule The Night', 'Ready To Roll' and 'Dream Child' tread the fine line between Hard Rock and all-out Heavy Metal perfectly, the title track itself bearing more than a passing resemblance to classic Dio. The dramatic 'The Devil's Music' is a slower and more theatrical track with elements of early Savatage, the use of violin on the softer musical passages adding to the eeriness of the song, while the age-old lyrical subject of the misunderstanding of Heavy Metal gets a huge thumbs-up from me.

To select other highlights, 'A Senator's Gun' is a mid-paced, moody cut with an interesting lyrical concept and 'Who's Gonna Love You?' is a riff-heavy Bluesy excursion with more than a hint of Whitesnake. But it's the pairing of 'Late Last Night' and 'Long Road Home' that demonstrate the more melodious side of FireWölfe, effortlessly blending big choruses with a Hard Rock delivery.

Classy in delivery with some highly impressive performances, 'We Rule The Night' is well worth investigating.
