One can only admire what has been achieved here on what I'm guessing is a limited budget.

Danish trio Little Fish have endured a lot since they formed in 1994, not least the fact that it has taken twenty years to release their first album. Henrik Berger (vocals/guitar), Dennis Andresen (bass) and Fridi Oster (drums) all began playing their respective instruments at an early age and have played live regularly since they first came together. If I'm honest, I was expecting very little from 'The Gordian Knot' so imagine my surprise after just one play.

'Your Embrace' is an up-tempo opener, punchy in-your-face riffs and brash vocals are the order of your day, but the biggest draw is the impact of the melodies. They are instant and infectious and if you have a taste for Modern Pop/Rock then there are eleven songs here that will appeal big time. Fans of Foo Fighters or possibly Seether will find much here to like and though the band are European, the attitude is distinctly American.

The material is energetic with a hint of melancholy, the perfect medium for some thoughtful and ultimately uplifting lyrics. The mix captures a great live sound and everything is really well balanced, highlighting some quality musicianship. 'The Wake Up Call' does exactly that whilst 'Real' is a ballad of sorts featuring subtleties in abundance. Though the pace is tempered slightly, the energy levels remain and keyboards are brought in to underpin the stirring power chords. The attitude relents towards the close of the album but the quality of the material remains unquestionable. It is hard to believe that the forty-one minute running time has gone so quickly and repeat play is something of a no brainer. The album's mastering was done by Emily Lazar, who has recently worked with the Foos and also Depeche Mode and David Bowie in the past, so clearly she saw there was enough here to warrant involvement.

One can only admire what has been achieved here on what I'm guessing is a limited budget and I can only hope it is not another twenty years before we here from Little Fish again. In fact, I think I will leave the last word to Berger... "it would be great to tour the world and sell a million records but let's start with trying to raise enough money to do a sequel".
