This is Melodic Rock with a classic 1980s vibe.

Don't let the Thrash Metal artwork on the cover fool you, this is Melodic Rock with a classic 1980s vibe. Assuming they were a bunch of young energetic Swedes, I was surprised to find out they were in fact from Belfast. The music itself isn't trying to be clever; it's straightforward Rock with a bit of Metal muscle here and there. Think Skid Row with a touch of Judas Priest, a bit of Irish Rockers Million Dollar Trash and plenty of melody.

It's lifted by some good singing from Dave Balfour and the music is high energy; twin guitars squall, drums pummel and Balfour's vocals are aided by gang chant choruses. You sense they're putting their all into this and you can almost smell the sweat dripping off them. Northern Irish bands often have a bit of Bluesy grit in their grooves and Maverick are no exception.
There's enough variety here to make this a disc worth repeated plays. Try to get through 'In Our Blood' without pumping your fist in the air... it can't be done. 'One More Day' is a song condemning killing in the name of religion that has one of the best hooks and would work well live as a sing-along. Indeed, the gang chant vocals are made to be sung by Rock crowds.

There's the Sleazier Rock of 'Electric' and 'Rock 'N' Roll Lady' comes across like Crash Diet or Crazy Lixx, 'Shackled' has a good guitar intro and 'Side By Side' has one of the best melodies. The lyrics cover a wide range of themes, some serious, some more "Rock 'n' Roll" but they all share a similar concept. This concept is the title of the record 'Quid Pro Quo' so there's an element of "something for something" happening to the protagonists in the songs.

They've shared stages with 1980s bands like Faster Pussycat and Tigertailz and they're not out of their depth in that company. A surprise package and if they replicate the energy on this disc live, then these Irish lads are onto something.
