A fascinating and nostalgic glimpse under the bonnet of one of the NWOBHM's most promising bands.

If you've heard fathers and older brothers waxing lyrical about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (or NWOBHM to cite its near unpronounceable acronym) and you want to know what all the fuss was about, you have various options. You could seek out the best major label exemplars of the genre; Saxon's 'Wheels Of Steel', Iron Maiden's eponymous debut or Diamond Head's 'Living On Borrowed Time' to name but three. Alternatively, you could seek out one of the many compilation albums featuring the brash, young guns of the day. Or you could spend your well earned bucks on 'The Boys From Brazil Street', a set of archive Blitzkrieg recordings, presented here as 'Volume One'.

Despite a second coming in the mid-1980s under the guidance of vocalist Brian Ross and the steady growth of a not insubstantial body of work since, Blitzkrieg are still best known for their influence on the fledgling Metallica. Lars Ulrich and co famously covered 'Blitzkrieg' itself – one of the outstanding tracks of the NWOBHM era and the track that opens this compilation with a touch of "hocus pocus".

'...Street' is, in fact, a collection of three sets; a three-track demo recorded in November 1980; a five-track session recorded for Neat Records in February 1981 and a further eight tracks recorded in a second session for Neat in May 1981. There is some repetition; 'Armageddon' features in all three sets, 'Blitzkrieg' features twice as does 'Inferno'. There are two versions of 'The Space Traveller'; one is an instrumental and the other a run through with a new lyric penned by Ross in the studio.

Elsewhere, highlights include 'Calming The Savage Beast' and 'Take A Look Around', conclusive proof that Blitzkrieg were far more than the 'Buried Alive' single and its famous B-side. We are also treated, if that's the right word, to a 'Child in Time/Highway Star' medley that, if nothing else, brims with enthusiasm.

Although the quality is not comparable to a studio release – four of the songs were later recorded for the 1985 release 'A Time Of Changes' – there is much here that captures the spirit and excitement of the times. There is also much to suggest that Jim Sieroto was a talented guitarist and song-writer who could have gone on to bigger and better things.

'The Boys From Brazil Street' is a fascinating and nostalgic glimpse under the bonnet of one of the NWOBHM's most promising bands. It's not perfect by any means, but then the NWOBHM never was. It majored on power, speed, excitement and raw imperfection was part of its charm. The original Blitzkrieg never made it out of 1981. On the evidence presented here, they could and perhaps should have done.
