A five-piece from Leicester with a highly commendable, self sufficient attitude and approach to their work.

A big round of applause for Maybeshewill, a five-piece from Leicester with a highly commendable, self sufficient attitude and approach to their work. Having managed and self-recorded their three full-length albums to date, their DIY style and aspirations have paid off with their fourth effort being released through Superball Music and it sees their ambitions being pushed into a new area.

Taking the concept of the album which presents a musical solution to dealing with world issues and problems (if only it were it that easy!), they've based their instrumental compositions on themes of nostalgia, disconnection and the constant feeling of motion which they relate to having spent long periods away from home on the road.

The series of four and five minute soundscapes commences with the short '...' leading into 'In Amber' which pretty much encapsulates the sound of the whole album which on the first few listens tends to stand as a whole without any particular track standing out. It comes across as a combination of elements of the sort of sweeping grandeur you get with Anathema and parts which recall the spinning guitars and piano you'd find in some of Coldplay's music.

However given time and effort, like most music, different aspects of Maybeshewill start to rise up and make themselves heard. Having experimented with strings and electronic on 2011's 'I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone', there are a whole gamut of styles coming together; washes of shimmering guitar mix with electronica while ambitious orchestration merges with what borders on Hip Hop beats.

Both 'Asiatic' (which has some violin motifs alongside a repetitive piano figure) and closing track 'Volga' (a gentle piano verging on classical building slowly and evolving into a gentle choir of voices) offer up something which rolls along very much akin to a travelogue soundtrack. On the more mainstream side, they do their best Coldplay sound-alike in 'Sanctuary'; just a vocal added and you'd have a stadium filling anthem. They also aren't afraid either to have a go at something which is totally bombastic and over the top as they do in 'Waking Life', which then suddenly switches gear into a calm after the storm moment.

How well does their Instrumental Rock stand up? The success of the likes of Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream and the lengthy passages of instrumental music to be found in the Progressive genre suggest that it's a rich vein to be plundered and with 'Fair Youth' Maybeshewill are on their way to doing exactly that.
