It's FM: Flippin' Marvellous!

Though they scaled the dizzy heights of success back in the eighties, FM have gone some way to recapturing former glories since their 2007 reformation with hit albums, a series of successful tours and high-profile support slots and regular play-listing by the likes of Radio 2 and Planet Rock. Front-man Steve Overland has readily acknowledged that their monumental appearance at Firefest in 2007 was a huge contributing factor in what led to their resurgence. It's something that everybody here at Fireworks can be rightly proud of, especially Firefest legend Kieran Dargan for his incessant cajoling to actually reunite the band.

All the recent FM albums have their fair share of light and shade throughout the songs on offer. 'Heroes And Villains' itself has two ballads to speak of; 'Incredible' is the excellent classic lighter-in-the-air power ballad while the atypical 'Walking With Angels' is a serene, stripped-down acoustic piece (a first for FM) with subtle string effects, allowing ample expanse for Overland to wrap those golden tonsils around as only he can. However, the rest the album is a full-on, Hard-Rocking, guitar-driven, all-round thumpingly good anthemic barnstormer, yet it remains chock-full of the melodies that endeared us to the band all those years ago; think the classic FM sound of old updated for the here and now.

'Digging Up The Dirt' kicks things off in fine (and surprisingly heavy) style, a Def Leppard-sounding rhythm expanding into a huge Thunder-style groove with a dirty guitar riff from Jim Kirkpatrick, who has truly established himself as an integral part of the FM sound. It's followed by the simply magnificent 'You're The Best Thing About Me', a lively, uplifting Melodic Rock anthem with sumptuous melodies and harmonies that hit you from all sides – a track surely destined for heavy radio rotation. 'Life Is A Highway' is another lively Rocker with an eighties American feel whilst the dynamic 'Fire And Rain' drifts back to the Groove Rock sound of the opener, albeit with a more Classic Rock feel and topped with a screaming guitar solo.

Following the first of the aforementioned ballads, the pace is lifted with 'Call On Me', another lively, driving Rocker with the biggest chorus of the whole album. 'Cold Hearted' is resurrected from the 'Futurama' EP, 'Shape I'm In' is a "radio-friendly" Pop Rocker, 'Big Brother' is a darker, heavier grooving piece, 'Some Days I Only Wanna Rock And Roll' leans heavily towards The Rolling Stones with a touch of sax at the finale, 'I Want You' is wonderfully catchy and a nod back to FM's glorious past, leaving the acoustic ballad to close proceedings in a sedate but beautiful style.

Do I need to say more? It's FM – Flippin' Marvellous!
