An excellent piece of music through and through.

Five years after their self-titled debut ‘Kiske / Somerville’, German Metal vocal legend Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic, Place Vendome, Avantasia) and outstanding vocal authority Amanda Somerville (Trillium, Avantasia, HDK) now present us with their second release ‘City Of Heroes’. The two singers are joined by excellent guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, PV), the almighty bassist Mat Sinner (Sinner, PF, Voodoo Circle) and very young and highly talented drummer Veronika Lukešová (Doctor Victor, Rock Meets Classic).

‘City Of Heroes’ opens with the title-track which is a highly energetic, up-tempo Melodic Hard Rock track with a catchy chorus and very fine guitar riffs. It clearly showcases how well the two vocalists work together even though their actual vocal abilities rather develop their full potential as the album progresses. ‘Walk On Water’ gave me goose bumps when I heard it for the first time. The first couple of seconds let one know it’s a great Symphonic-influenced track with a lot of guitar work and great lyrics. This track reminds me of ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’, the Nightwish version, and could easily have been penned by this very Symphonic Finnish Metal band. ‘Rising Up’, ‘Salvation’ and ‘Lights Out’ arrive with inventive melodies alongside a good use of keyboards and drums. Unfortunately, they’re all a bit too cheesy regarding the lyrics and therefore all too predictable. ‘Breaking Neptune’ is a fantastic, character-full composition of strong and sophisticated vocals, heavy drums and fantastic axe work.

The absolutely outstanding, emotional, soft and simply wonderful ballad ‘Ocean Of Tears’ represents modern Classic Music (with varied influences) at its best; perfectly balanced in sound and production. ‘Open Your Eyes’ and ‘Last Goodbye’ are nice, positive-sounding, drum-influenced counterparts to the previous ballad. ‘After The Night Is Over’ is another exceptional, very melodic, almost longing track. Whereas the brilliantly composed acoustic guitars and orchestral elements create a marvellous atmosphere anyway, the vocal skills of both singers can be heard in all their facets and almost make one stand in awe at the results. ‘Run With A Dream’ and ‘Right Now’ complete this album as two more up-beat, Melodic Rock pieces with a lot of quality riffs, orchestral elements and, yet again, great vocals.

‘City Of Heroes’ is an excellent piece of music through and through. One more fact that needs to be highlighted is the absolutely phenomenal production by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat Amaranthe, PF, Pretty Maids, Doro). This pristine sound contributes massively to the already great tracks. It’s a bit like diamond cutting... having carved out the most beautiful characteristics of every single track and the skills contributed, the entire record is now shining like a unique musical diamond.
