If this is the soundtrack of a band undergoing a renaissance, then count me in!

Like a lot of the bands that were swept along by the groundswell of the euphoria that surrounded the burgeoning NWOBHM at the dawn of the 1980s, Praying Mantis didn't exactly fit the standard business model or paradigm. They were far too melodic and accomplished for starters (and yes, that's most definitely meant as a compliment!), their svelte melodies and comparatively catchy tunes a far cry from the perennial pub bands who provided the soundtrack to oblivion most weekends.

In many respects, it's a shame that they didn't follow the likes of Iron Maiden and Def Leppard onto a bigger world stage as I've always felt their music deserved a much more expansive audience. But hey, what else could you expect from an intrinsically corrupt industry run by muppets at the whim of bean counters with no musical soul?

It's been a good six years since the last PM album emerged – 2009's excellent 'Sanctuary' – and whilst the core of the band (the Troy brothers & Andy Burgess) is still going strong, latest release 'Legacy' sees a couple of changes in the band's line-up with "new" vocalist John "Jaycee" Cuijpers and drummer Hans In 'T Zandt making their debut. Quite what drives a band that's been active for more than forty years (particularly one that hasn't had the trappings of success some of their contemporaries have enjoyed) is a debatable point, but whatever it is, Chris and Tino Troyseem appear to have large reserves of it stashed away somewhere!

Boasting another stunning piece of Rodney Matthews' artwork (this guy has long been my favourite artist), 'Legacy' sees Praying Mantis once again deliver their own unique brand of fire and brimstone wrapped in a velvet glove. Whether it's the influx of new blood into their ranks that has given them added impetus or not is open to question, but there's something of a renewed sense of purpose permeating throughout the digital grooves of 'Legacy'. The melodies seem brighter, the passion burns stronger and the melodramatic ebb and flow seems more natural than it has for years.

In amongst anthemic crowd pleasers like 'The Runner', the pompous 'Fight For Your Honour' (cracking choice of opener guys!) and 'Against The World', you'll find plenty of equally engaging moody numbers like 'The One', 'All I See' and 'Eyes Of A Child' as well as smouldering ballads such as 'Better Man'.

If this is the soundtrack of a band undergoing a renaissance, then count me in!
