A lot of fun and just a bit different to the everything else out there at the moment.

The three years that have passed since 'Manala' represents the biggest gap in the recording career of Finnish Folk Metallers Korpiklaani, while being the first release featuring new accordion player Sami Perttula.

Although only lead singer/guitarist Jonne Jarvela remains from the 2003 debut 'Spirit Of The Forest', 'Noita' continues and develops further their unique style of Metal. The addition of Perrtula and the increased role of violinist Tuomas Rounakari really bring the music to life. In fact Rounakari's violin often steps up and takes the place of the lead guitar and the album works all the better for it.

On first listen to the uninitiated, there may be a furrowed brow or two and a scratched head but repeated listens soon reveals something rather enjoyable. Jarvela's somewhat gruff vocals while singing in his native tongue, together with the up-tempo, riotous, hard-hitting Folk, turns from baffling to utterly addictive in a short space of time.

Opener 'Viinamaen Mies' is a real stomper and is absolutely guaranteed to get you off your backside and up onto your feet while the "We Will Rock You" tribal drums and soaring chorus of 'Lempo' will have you clapping and singing along in no time.

Listening to 'Jouni Jouni' leaves a nagging feeling of something familiar until it hits you that it's a rather unique take on Tommy James And The Shondells' 'Mony Mony' which was also covered by Billy Idol, who did a more faithful rendition of the original.

Although 'Noita' literally means "witch", the band are keen to explain away the negative connotations preferring to explain it as someone who has a wider understanding of nature, rather like a Native American Medicine Man or Shaman. Whatever the meaning, the music feels vibrant and uplifting and as far from dark and negative as you could hope to get.

Although the album feels fairly short at ten songs and around forty minutes of music, this does actually enhance the listening experience. There's no fat or flab to get in the way and no cramming in songs for the sake of it. Just ten rabble-rousing, dance-inducing slabs of Finnish Folk Metal that are rather a lot of fun and just a bit different to the everything else out there at the moment.
