An "in-your-face" classic Helloween album because they have nothing to prove to anybody; for that I applaud them.

"Just good, old, classic Heavy Metal" states Michael Weikath about this new album and I don't disagree with him one little bit. With a glorious Martin Hausler cover, 'My God-Given Right' has all the hallmarks of their classic 1980's and 1990's heyday. Leaving aside the experimental last two albums of the Michael Kiske era, there is much here to equate them with their pomp.

Long-time Helloween aficionados are going to enjoy everything on offer here, but the more recent recruits may lament the absence of any true Power Metal offerings. The thing is, despite pioneering, to a certain extent, the Power Metal genre, Helloween never truly embraced it – they were more the pioneers of Melodic Speed Metal – and after 'Pink Bubbles Go Ape' and 'Chameleon' truly flummoxed their fans, they've had to work incredibly hard to get back to the pantheon reserved for the great and iconic Metal bands of history.

Helloween have delivered an album that firmly puts them back in that bracket. Produced once again by Charlie Bauerfiend, it would be a major surprise if this album was anything less than spectacular sonically as well as artistically.

Kicking off with a fast-paced anthemic number, 'Heroes' (with its great solo) sets the tone that leads us into first single and the Weikath-penned 'Battle's Won' with its 'Dr Stein' feel (for me) and unusual descending key in the chorus. The title track again picks up the pace with pounding drums from Daniel Loble and a typical Andi Deris melodic chorus. The title derives from a quote from Deris' father he said to him upon finishing school.

Helloween fans will notice that there are less Weikath songs included these days, but it's through choice. 'Creatures In Heaven' and 'Claws' are also his, the former typical fast-paced Helloween with a rhythmic verse full of melody and noticeable Hammond Organ and the latter (again) fast-paced but heavy with intricate rhythm and melody patterns – schizophrenic with twin solos that aren't strictly straight-ahead.

With most of the songs in a happy Helloween style, like the Deris-penned anthemic and super melodic 'Stay Crazy', the darker numbers so beloved by the newer fans include the heavy and dark closing number 'You, Still Of War' and the rhythmic marching of 'The Swing Of A Fallen World'.

But I couldn't leave you without mentioning 'Lost In America'; based on a true story of their aircraft pilot announcing he was lost whilst flying over America. Fast-paced and melodic with the line "we are high, we are far, but we wonder where we are, we are lost, lost in America'.

Helloween have released an "in-your-face" classic Helloween album because they have nothing to prove to anybody; for that I applaud them.
