An essential album for all lovers of Southern Hard Rock.

This band's name sounds heavier than the music that they play, that being a classic blend of Old-School and Southern Rock with a sprinkling of Country, similar to Black Stone Cherry and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Lead singer and guitarist, Olly Wallenberg, explains that Whiskey Hell is like Alice Coopers "Nightmare"; his past experiences with drugs and whiskey being a little on the excessive side. Wallenberg knew that if he did not change his lifestyle it would turn his life into a living hell, hence the name WWH.

Listening to 'Bullets 'N' Burritos', the band's sophomore record following 2013's 'Booze 'N' Boogie', you would be convinced that they came from Alabama, Tennessee or Louisiana and not Hamburg, North Germany. The three-piece are spear-headed by the multi-talented Wallenberg, drummer Lars Lindner and bassist Carsten "Sharky" Meyer.

The album starts with the BSC sounding and typical Southern Rock standard 'Weed 'N' Whiskey' but it is the second track 'Blood, Sweat 'N' Wrenches', with its glorious riff, that really grabs the listener's attention. The early momentum is maintained with the first of two covers, AC/DC's 'Kicked In The Teeth', which never strays too far from the original. 'Time Flies' reduces the tempo, being laid-back Blues, and highlights the warmth to Wallenberg's vocals as opposed to the grit and power he exhibits on the Rockier numbers.

The tattoos are not the only similarities that WWH share with one of my favourite live acts Little Caesar and the song 'Mr Rock 'N' Roll' (dedicated to Lemmy Kilmister) has the vibe of the Californian Rock 'n' Rollers. The title track itself could have been recorded by that "Lil' Ol' Band From Texas", 'POW*MIA' is a heart-wrenching ballad whilst 'Moonshine Boogie' is back in BSC territory. My personal favourite track is 'Hairspray Hell', which has an almost Progressive style with its slow mid-refrain.

With the death of his best friend and separation from his wife in the same year, writing the song '2013' has obviously been cathartic for Wallenberg; however, this "sat round a camp-fire", Country-style song is the only one that I find myself reaching for the skip button during repeated plays.

However, all is forgiven with the superb closing salvo, starting with a magnificent rendition of the Mountain classic 'Mississippi Queen' that sits perfectly with the original numbers. With the fantastic production, courtesy of Timo Höcke, I doubt that this song has ever sounded sonically so good. The album closes with a beautiful instrumental 'Rio Pecos' (the river that runs through New Mexico and Texas) that would not be out of place on a SRV album.

Wallenberg's Whiskey Hell's 'Bullets 'N' Burritos' is an essential album for all lovers of Southern Hard Rock.
