When they Rock, they Rock.

'We Will Go On' is the second album from young Scottish band Estrella. It's vibrant energetic "traditional" AOR – in other words good time, feel good stuff. It's also an album that attempts to cover all the bases.

'Here I Am' (the album's first single), 'Wheels Keep Turning' and title track (as well as second single) 'We Will Go On' have big anthemic, sing-along choruses. 'This Heaven' and 'Be There' find the band in a more mature and controlled mode. 'Undercover Lover' and 'Rock City' are brash, noisy and more dangerous than most, the former benefitting from some nice string sound embellishments, while the latter (like the Saxon track of the same name) sounds prepped for live performance. 'Hard To Get' and album closer 'My Own Way' are more Bluesy and, for me, the pick of the crop.

Do I have a reservation? Well, cited influences include Aerosmith, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Van Halen and Bon Jovi, and although the claim is that "Estrella add a refreshing new feel to the Rock genre", there is room to doubt that they really offer anything that goes beyond the work of their influences. Despite its big soulful riff, 'Reason' (for example) has a strong sense of Steven Tyler about the vocal delivery and melody. Similarly 'Hold On' sounds like a weak BJ track.

At times perhaps, '...On' is a bit "Anthemic Rock by numbers". Estrella display an undoubtedly honed craft but one that's sometimes lacking a touch in guile or novelty. At other times, however, they really sound like they mean it, with guitarist Luke Gunn producing fiery lead work that lifts the songs and maintains the listener's interest. Certainly '...On' is an album that sells Estrella as a live proposition and one can easily imagine many of these songs coming alive on stage.

I saw them live once when they were giving bottles of lager out to the audience. If memory serves me well, it got them an encore. Despite reservations about its originality, 'We Will Go On' is appealing and consistent enough to suggest that Estrella don't need gimmicks. When they Rock, they Rock.
