A solid album that often impresses.

If you like your Rock music hard and heavy, with sporadic melodic enhancement, then this 2014 album could well be right up your street. Dancing Flame originate from Rio de Janeiro, and although they are relative unknowns to most of us, (I assume), they are certainly not newcomers to the scene. Under the moniker of Dirty Woman they recorded two demos, 'Strike A Blow' and 'Red Moon' in 1995 and 1998 respectively; then, under their present name released their self-titled debut album in 2009. Now, almost two decades (and a lot of hard work, no doubt) after their conception comes their grand sophomore opus 'Carnival Of Flames', whose cover art, whilst symptomatic of the music, is still rather impressive.

Irrespective of whether your tastes lie in the Heavy Metal, Heavy Rock or Classic Rock genres (an ambiguous triumvirate if ever there was one) DF will tickle your taste buds at some point or another during the generous fifteen songs/seventy minutes on offer here. Adriano Oliveira (vocals), Emerson Mello (guitar), Glaydson Moreira (guitar), Kleber Reis (bass) and Bruno Martini (drums) manage to create and maintain a high level of musicianship throughout; but it's the noticeable dual guitar attack of Mello and Moreira that bring the songs to life, despite the zealous vocal dexterity of Oliveira.

Following a brief cinematic intro, 'Dreamweaver', 'Follow The Sun' (featuring Mark Boals from Ring of Fire, Yngwie Malmsteen and Royal Hunt) and 'Ronnie' scoop you up and transport you back to those glory days of the 1970's and 1980's, when Heavy Rock/Metal ruled. The latter is especially interesting, as it's an expressive homage to the late, great Ronnie James Dio himself; although the lyrics are a little cheesy, I'm sure RJD would have approved. Aside from Dio (of which his influences are rampant throughout the album), there are strong flavours from the NWOBHM era ... notably Judas Priest, Saxon, Demon et al.

Personally, I found the album more digestible when DF reign in the Metal and focus more on the more melodic side of their talents. 'Don't Let Me Down', 'Runaway Soul', 'The Highest Hill' and the imposing 'Queen or Clown – Riddles in the Dark' are well crafted songs that clearly display a softer undercarriage to the band's steely fuselage. At the core of the opus are two ballads that, because of their propinquity to each other, sadly do little more than eradicate the established impetus although I'm not saying 'Fortress Of Belief' and 'Dry My Tears' are substandard – the former is a pleasant acoustic song, whilst the latter features the unmistakeable vocals of D. C. Cooper (Royal Hunt, Silent Force).

'Carnival Of Flames' is a solid album that often impresses; but with so much to digest, just be careful you don't get indigestion.
