Truly a case of try it for yourself before you decide.

As some of you may have easily worked out, the Reviews Ed and I share an enthusiasm for the Female-Fronted bands, especially those in the Symphonic and Gothic Rock/Metal spectrum. However, the new album by Sirenia, entitled 'The Seventh Life Path', has caused a bit of debate between us as to whether it should actually be featured in the first place. Strange I know given all their recent albums have featured in this magazine at one time or another.

The consternation arose from that fact that, on this latest release, not only have the dreaded grunts/growls returned (which if used for effect we/I have no problem with), but they have come back in abundance and we weren't sure if fans old or new would appreciate this. We concluded a review might help people to make their minds up so here we are.

The music itself is just what you'd expect from this great band; it is forceful, dark, full of fury and attitude and it is a tour-de-force in Gothic Metal and that usually would be that – all would be good. However on nearly every track found on '...Path' (and in a couple of instances we are talking whole songs) there are grunts and growls to be found on them.

As stated above, when used to enhance a song or for dramatic effect, growls in some forms of music do have their place. On '...Path', as much as I actually like the songs/music, the grunts did start to grate after a while and you begin to wish that the band had let their singer (Ailyn) do her thing all by herself a little more often.

The growls put to one side, we find that Sirenia have created a Symphonic Monster that has sweeping vistas that open onto musical landscapes encompassing everything from outright Metal to wispy ethereal Prog. Songs such as 'Serpent', 'Once My Light' 'Elixir', 'Insania' (thankfully not the Peter Andre monstrosity) and 'The Silver Eye' are all well worth a listen.

Personally I enjoyed listening to most of this album, but those of you of a gentler musical persuasion might not enjoy the increased use of grunts and growls that pervade throughout these songs. On the whole, I personally could have done with less of them myself but this is still a very good album and one that shouldn't be ignored just because of their use.

Truly a case of try it for yourself before you decide.
