Terra Nova have come back with a seriously strong album.

Having reviewed Terra Nova a few times over the years, I have always had a soft spot for the clever AOR peddled by brothers Ron and Fred Hendrix. TN were, at one stage, hotly tipped to become one of the shining lights of the AOR scene. Unfortunately plagued by inconsistent output, not to mention the sporadic nature of their releases (an average five to six years between albums), for many they simply faded out of view. Their previous two efforts on Frontiers ('Escape' in 2005 and 'Come Alive' in 2010) failed to rescue them from the "remember them" file, and consequently many of us thought they were done.

Fast forward to 2015, with the now "almost traditional" five year gap maintained, and the band have returned with their seventh studio recording in the shape of 'Reinvent Yourself'; before you ask ladies and gents... yes the album title is indeed self-explanatory.

Reinventing a twenty year old band isn't easy but they have pulled it off quite nicely. The opening trio of 'Meltdown', 'Shadow Man' and 'Broken' are worth the money straight off; each song is typical of the band and an example of "hi-tech" Euro AOR with layer upon layer of backing vocals, swirling keyboards and plenty of guitar high in the mix. Let's face it, it's TN we're talking about and a leopard does not change its spots.

There is however the odd clunker such as the ballad 'Jenna' which is simply awful beyond belief and annoying similar to Kool And The Gang's 'Cherish'... really, I mean really? Aside from this obviously failure of quality control, there is MORE than enough here to redeem the album; even the cheesy 'Rock Army' which, despite the title, is a fist-pumping little ditty, the kind that Kiss used to do so well. Title track 'Reinvent Yourself', 'Expectations' and 'Reincarnation' have more than enough about them to maybe show the Scandi-kids that they don't have sole rights to snappy, up-tempo, "hi-tech" AOR.

All in all, apart from the aforementioned clunker, Terra Nova have come back with a seriously strong album, one that will evoke many memories of their heyday of the mid/late nineties. But the band have also proved beyond doubt, even after some the below par releases, that form is temporary yet class is permanent. Welcome back guys, but please don't make us wait five years for another one!
