A classy, well executed meshing of worlds.

Something of a Finnish "super-group" project put together a few years back by former Sonata Arctica guitarist Jani Liimatainen, Cain's Offering raised more than a few eyebrows with the release of their 'Gather The Faithful' debut in the fall of 2009.

Featuring as it did Stratovarius front-man Timo Kotipelto and keyboard maestro Mikko Harkin (also ex-SA/Kenziner), the bombastically overblown blend of Stratovarius, SA, Nightwish, Leverage and Iron Maiden (with even some thrown in Europe at times) was a real melting pot of juxtaposable moods and conflicting emotions; an enigmatic yet thoroughly compelling collage of Hard Rock, Symphonic, Power and Speed Metal influences.

Aside from the aforementioned Liimatainen and Kotipelto, only drummer Jani Hurula remains from the '...Faithful' line-up, but with Kotipelto's Stratovarius colleague Jens Johansson taking over on keyboards and bassist Jonas Kuhlberg joining the fray, sophomore outing 'Stormcrow' has all the potential to reach out to an even greater audience. "Stirring Hard Rock melodies bolted on to flamboyant Power Metal Symphonies" still defines the CO approach (as you'd naturally expect given those involved) – witness the rampaging 'Constellation Of Tears', the galloping 'Rising Sun' or rousing opener 'Stormcrow' – but every now and then there's a welcome hint of forward momentum as slightly different influences come into the mix.

'The Best Of Times' for example comes across as a slightly less aggressive Amaranthe with maybe just a touch of Children Of Bodom (no Death Metal grunts though!), 'My Heart Beats For No One' has a hint of My Chemical Romance and atmospheric ballad 'Too Tired To Run' underscores a classic Scandie sound with a Neo-Gothic, almost whimsical, orchestral lilt. On top of that, for some reason I'm actually quite drawn to the lengthy instrumental piece 'I Am Legion', not least because had they gone the whole hog and put vocals to it, it would've given the likes of Within Temptation a real run for their money!

For some unknown reason, nobody does this kind of stuff quite as well as the Finns; all in all 'Stormcrow' is a classy, well executed meshing of worlds.
