You will, if you give them a chance, find yourself enjoying one of the really great Metal bands working today.

I personally believe that language should never be a barrier or hindrance when listening to great music. Does it matter if the song is sung in English, German, Spanish or in this case French? Not really and as long as the song/album is good then that should, I personally think, be enough?

Manigance are French and have sung in their native tongue since their debut album 'Ange Ou Demon' came out thirteen years ago and I have been a huge fan of their work ever since. The band play a very melodic version of Progressive Power Metal and remind you at times of the mighty Vanden Plas, Evergrey and Symphony X. Singing as they do in their native tongue gives them an edge (an edge that others might not have) and the passion filled vocal delivery of Didier Delsaux can be heard in each word he sings (regardless of whether you can understand him or not).

For example, take the opening trio of 'Pur Sange', 'Leader' and 'Le Cote Sombre', three songs that are full of dynamic musicianship, blistering guitar solos and sweeping keyboards. As you listen, it doesn't matter if the lyrics are understood or not because the music itself is of the highest quality, and even though you might not understand what's being said, you can understand the passion and emotion with which it's delivered.

Following these, check out title cut 'Volte-Face', a mid-paced Rocker with some more stellar guitar work from Francois Merle and Bruno Ramos. This is a song chock full of melody and it sums up just what Manigance are all about in one fell swoop. 'Sans Relache' builds slowly from a vocal accompanied solely by acoustic guitar until the rest of the band blast in; led by the explosive keyboards of Jean Lahargue, the song then gallops along at a rapid pace, driven by the vocals of Delsaux who is a commanding presence throughout. That still leaves 'Le Mirage', which is a joyous three minute romp full of aggressive guitar riffs, powerful drums and bass, and 'Parjure' where, once again, those impressive vocals vie with the other instruments for supremacy.

Manigance are a great band with a lot to offer and they should not be overlooked by anyone just because they have chosen to sing in their own language. Their skill at writing great Melodic Prog Metal songs should outweigh any bias you might have. Instead you will, if you give them a chance, find yourself enjoying one of the really great Metal bands working today.
