I tend to like it when musicians don't follow the same old patterns again and again, but here it turned out decidedly odd.

Having released his last solo record (῾Different') in 2010, as well as having been involved in numerous other bands (Redrum, Zeno, Silent Force, Bloodbound to name but a few), German Rock vocalist Michael Bormann has had a busy time during the last four years. 2015 sees him return to his solo ventures with his fifth album 'Closer'.

Since Bormann wrote all the songs himself and additionally played most of the instruments (other contributors include Marco Grasshoff (guitar), Eric Ragno (keyboards) and Bobby Stoecker (guitar)), the entire record is trademarked by his style. However, compared to his earlier efforts, various influences from other genres, such as Electro, Rap and Nu Metal – as I would describe it – make this record..."different".

'Closer' is generally rooted in Melodic Rock; 'I'm Not Your Entertainment', 'Let's Make History', 'Never Say Die' 'Rich Men's World' and 'I Wanna Be A Rockstar' certainly fit that description. Unfortunately, the latter is just too cheesy and appears like a miscarried attempt to write a song for the well-known movie 'Rockstar'. The "white boy" Rap in 'Down To The Bottle' and 'Can't Get A Touch Too Much' appears equally weird and alien. I tend to like it when musicians test themselves and don't follow the same old patterns again and again, but here it turned out decidedly odd.

'For This One Time In Life' and the title-track are ballad-like and rather enjoyable, mainly because they really show off Bormann's great vocal abilities. The album also includes his interpretation of Demi Lovato's 'Warrior' which also appeared on the television show 'The Voice Of Germany'. The participation in said TV formats is questionable and I surely don't think that Bormann needed this as a platform after all he's achieved. But that's just my thoughts... 'Because We Are The World' is also extraordinarily cheesy; a mixture of Rock and World music with a "message", accompanied by the ultimate proof why German child choirs are a very bad idea when English lyrics are involved. The far-from-authentic, dripping sentimentality of this entire track almost made my toenails curl.

I'm feel bad for giving 'Closer' a rather poor review since I always liked Bormann and I truly appreciate his former records and his fantastic voice. But although most of the songs are generally nicely written, with a nice dose of AOR accessibility and catchy choruses, the cheesiness and questionable elements of other genres as well as a rather flat sound make the record appear like an attempt to be more modern, inventive and sophisticated.

In this case I'd say sticking to what is good makes more sense and I truly hope to be presented with another great AOR record by Michael Bormann at some point in the future.
