There's no doubt that this could have been way better given the reasonable set of songs.

It's been difficult for Hinder recently. Predictably dropped by their label after the lacklustre 'Welcome To The Freakshow', the band then suffered the loss of vocalist Austin Winkler through an ongoing drug and alcohol problem.

Whilst Jared Weeks (Saving Abel) stepped into the fray to complete the tour, following a period of inactivity plus a failed experiment with Nashville-based Neal Nolan, Hinder finally opted for one time Faktion vocalist Marshal Dutton to fill the void. Dutton previously contributed to the song-writing and production of Hinder's most recent albums, striking up a rapport with drummer Cody Hanson in the process. A perfect fit then?

Hinder may not be to everyone's taste, being in the same genre as Nickelback; Winkler's vocals made them distinguishable from other like-minded Modern Rock bands. It's not that Dutton has a bad voice; it's just that it's anodyne and adds nothing notable to the songs that, in the main, are half decent.

The other surprise with this album is how bad the drum sound is considering that it's a drummer that produced it. Synthetic and robotic, it simply sounds like a glorified demo. Songs like opener 'Rather Hate Than Hurt' – a song written with Winkler in mind – is thin and seems like a left over from the previous album while 'Hit The Ground' is decent enough but lacks the kudos to elevate it above anything else. Likewise the ballads 'Foolish Eyes' and 'Letting Go' are reasonable "radio friendly" fodder but let down by weak production.

Hinder sound more comfortable cranking it up and yet the typically titled Hinder Rocker 'I Need Another Drink' or the thudding 'Nothing Left To Lose' – a song produced by Dutton and Hanson when it first appeared on the 9 Left Dead album 'The Wrong Things' in 2011 – lack that major label production that we are used to expecting with this style of music. Due to this, the album as a whole entity really can't hold a torch to the first two albums of the band or even the excellent 'All American Nightmare'.

It's unfair to say that this album is poor because with the input of a top name producer there's no doubt that this could have been way better given the reasonable set of songs. The elephant in the room on this album however is Dutton. Filling Winkler's shoes was always going to be difficult and yet the "in house" appointment sadly appears to have been nothing more than "the easy option" for a band that surely could have attracted someone with a little more vocal character and some well needed gravitas.
