One to file under Soul Rock.

These Australians have an old-school groove going on. This is Rock but more in tune with R 'n' B (no...not the modern, booty-grinding variety but the old-school 1960's style of Rhythm and Blues). This is the sound of a tight band serving the songs.

Whilst there's guitar and it does provide the odd stinging lead as found on the "blue-eyed Soul" of 'Dirty Soul', it's less about guitar power and more about the groove. What you get then is the feel of those wonderful old Stax records that Booker T And The MGs used to play on. The music is only there to support the singer and the song. Steve Hancock has a good Soul, Rock voice (but he doesn't have the depth of a Wilson Picket, Sam Cooke or Paul Rodgers but then who does?).

Often it's the little additions to the band's core sound that help colour and give character to the songs. Organ and keyboards complement many of the songs such as 'Lately I'm Confused', the Pop Rock, Country Soul hybrid 'Circus In Town' and the bassy 'Black And Blue Again'. 'Rollin' The Dice' and 'I'd Go Crazy' come across like a clean living version of Keith Richards' solo records and 'It's A Game' has a slight Deep Purple MK1 groove to it. The closing 'Slow Rain' benefits from the backing vocals while 'I'm Running' is given a Bluesier feel thanks to the addition of harmonica.

Although they cite influences of Led Zeppelin, Free, Bad Company, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith and The Black Crowes, this doesn't Rock as hard as any of those artists. That's not necessarily a criticism as they tap into a stronger Soul feel. It's the sound of a band working up a sweat but I'm talking a light bead of sweat on the brow rather than dripping sweat here. One to file under Soul Rock.
