Each and every song shines on this hugely impressive album.

Thailand is not a country that you tend to associate with Rock music. Traditionally it was the U.K. and the U.S.A. that produced the world's leading Rock acts. Over the years however, nations such as Germany, Italy and various Scandinavian countries have spawned bands of an ever increasing quality; yet few, if any, have broken through from the South Eastern Peninsula. That may be about to change.

Bangkok-based Melodius Deite look set to cause quite a stir with the release of their second album. With a grand name like MD and song titles that include 'The Sun Of Aztec' and 'Alexander The Great', you just know that this isn't going to be some quirky Punk Pop skater combo or a misery-enshrouded Emo Screamo group. The band themselves describe their music as Symphonic Melodic Progressive Power Metal and that pretty much sums them up to perfection. More melodic than most Progressive Metal bands and far, far more Symphonic than your average run of the mill Power Metal act, Melodius Deite have taken the best elements from these genres and crafted an album that is something rather special.

From the opening sweeping orchestration of 'Entering The Gate' to the closing roller coaster ride of 'Sailing Around The World' taking in a myriad of styles in between (including hints of Jazz Funk in the mid-section), this sprawling double album with have fans of these collective genres frothing at the gills.

Other than the opening scene setting instrumental, there's no short, sharp catchy songs here. Instead we get epic, dramatic, Cinematic, mini Symphonies where the dynamics rise and fall as the pace and atmosphere changes throughout the musical journey.

The musicianship is exemplary as is absolutely essential for music like this. Anything other than a virtuoso performance could render such ambition fruitless yet the guitar and keyboard playing of founding member Biggie P. Phanrath is exceptional. If you can imagine the Classical runs of Yngwie Malmsteen but with more space and subtlety, then you'd not be too far wide of the mark. Vocalist Ake N. Keartpanich also has the class to match the ambition with the power of Russell Allen and a rather impressive range that bursts into life on '...Aztec'.

Like all albums that are this complex, it may take a few listens for the delights to start to sink in but do persevere as it is well worth the effort. Highlights include the distinctly Eastern flavoured 'Pyramids Of Egypt' which has a slight hint of Symphony X at their most Progressive, the gargantuan 'Civilization' clocking in at a startling sixteen minutes and the rampant 'Land Of Fantasy'. But in truth, each and every song shines on this hugely impressive album.
