A fantastic way to learn more about the guitar maestro by the way of both his extraordinary music and his curious personality.

The guitar legend that is Steve Vai has never ceased to amaze in his extensive career, and this DVD is a perfect illustration of that. Containing a two and a half hours Los Angeles show along with the huge sum of three and a half hours of tour diary, this release showcases his unquestionable ability to play his God-like melodies and powerful riffs as well as offering a closer look into his life on the road (including footage and pictures with his wife and sons, crew and band mates).

In August 2012, Vai embarked on a two-year world tour that took him to places as diverse as France, Israel, Mexico, Japan and Russia. For the L.A. gig at Club Nokia, he had a TV station offering to film the evening, hence the footage obtained from the nine cameras – one of them on the actual guitar neck – which is totally impeccable, equally matched by the impressive sound which is crystal clear as you could expect from anything Vai-related.

If you attended any of the shows, watching the live footage will automatically take you back to that state of mesmerisation; if you didn't, at least you will be able to experience it from your own sofa. The set-list flows through different dynamics and was mainly focused on the most recent album ('The Story Of Light'), selections include, amongst others, the magical 'Weeping China Doll' and the ferocious 'John The Revelator', to which he welcomed Beverly McClellan onstage to sing it (as she did on the album). However, treasures like 'Whispering A Prayer', 'For The Love Of God and 'The Audience Is Listening' were also incorporated from previous albums as was 'The Ultra Zone'.

An impressive musician needs to be surrounded by equally talented band members and that is why guitarist Dave Weiner, drummer Jeremy Colson and bassist Philip Bynoe haven't left Vai's side in years. They are such a good, solid band that everything runs flawlessly and the boss even lets them shine on their own, such as allowing Weiner to play a track from his acoustic album. And everyone knows how fresh Vai likes to keep his live shows (examples are his continuous change of clothes, impressive stage lights, and on-stage jokes), hence the reason he invited harpist Deborah Henson-Conant, which adds a wealth of colour to the music, to the stage with her lit electric harp.

'Stillness In Motion: Vai Live In L.A.' is a fantastic way to learn more about the guitar maestro by the way of both his extraordinary music and his curious personality, which shows him doing the "touristy" things in the places he travels to. Get an afternoon off and indulge in this release. He is very proud of it and so he should be.
