Album by the new band of ex-Thunder and Winterville members.

This particular Union refers to the new band of ex-Thunder member Luke Morley and singer/songwriter Pete Shoulder, formerly of Winterville.
It would be all too easy to draw comparisons to Morley’s previous compositions for Thunder and, although there are a couple of songs in which you CAN hear Thunder similarities, they are very few and far between. This is a melodic, bluesy masterpiece with Shoulder’s soulful vocals oozing out of the speakers like melted chocolate. Morley and Shoulder both take on guitar duties for this album and they’ve enlisted fellow ex-Thunder member Chris Childs on bass and drummer Phil Martini (The Quireboys, Down ‘n’ Outz) to complete the rhythm section. The album was also produced by Morley and Shoulder and they’ve done a sterling job on it, concentrating on bringing out the amazing vocals and fabulous guitar work.

Whilst I could listen to songs like ‘Step Up To The Plate’ and ‘Watch The River Flow’ all day, there are just too many laid back – on the verge of country – songs on this album for me, although Morley and Shoulder execute them extremely well, I just wish they’d done a few more bluesy rockers and a few less melancholy ballads. I can seriously hear a song like ‘Easy Street’ being covered by the likes of Amy Winehouse with its tango rhythms, and ‘Holy Roller’ conjures up visions of the deep south, sitting on a porch having a singalong and a couple of beers with a harmonica and a steel guitar.
There are a lot of different styles on this album, from the meaty to the sublime – ‘Saviour’ being a favourite, which I presume is an attempt at showcasing the talents of the players, but I hope that on the next offering it’ll be a little more ballsy than this one.
