It won't be for everyone but there's plenty to like here.

Returning to Frontiers for the first time since 2009's 'Smoke And Mirrors', guitarist George Lynch and singer Oni Logan continue what is probably their most stable reunion thus far with this follow-up to last year's 'Sun Red Sun', extending what recording-wise has been the busiest period of Lynch's illustrious career. Drafting in drumming animal Brian Tichy (ex-Whitesnake) and long-time cohort Jeff Pilson (Foreigner) on bass is an astute move as both have historical links and highly individual styles that certainly add something to the fairly traditional Hard Rock of 'Rebel', albeit with some of Lynch's expected modern touches in the guitar sounds and the production.

'Automatic Fix' sets the scene for the whole album with a heady mix of old-school riffs, heavy bass and dark vocals, and whilst that description might be enough to put off the ones who only liked 'Wicked Sensation', Tichy's phenomenal drumming, a Bluesy breakdown and trademark Lynch solo anchor this a little nearer to their most popular album. Similarly 'Between The Truth And A Lie', 'Sanctuary' and 'Pine Tree Avenue' may be a little lacking in the hook department, but they have great grooves and recognisable Lynch Mob traits. Logan's vocal lifts the lumbering Rocker 'Testify' a touch and 'Dirty Money' sounds a little too much like the old standard 'For The Love Of Money' (covered by Bulletboys, Utopia etc.), but other than the infectious heavy Funk of the Lynch Mob meets Mother's Finest tune 'Jelly Roll', most of the best moments seem to be in the second half of the disc.

'The Hollow Queen' is an obvious winner, very melodic with neat vocal melodies, a great guitar solo and an urgent rhythm section, whilst 'The Ledge' has more of an atmospheric Queensryche/Dream Theater feel with different guitar tones and Logan using his lower register; it's quite subtle and works really well. I wasn't too sure about 'Kingdom Of Slaves' at first, but the dark-edged Blues Rocker has a stunning middle eight and guitar solo, the Eastern-tinged 'War' bringing the album to a close with a rush of adrenaline and perhaps the best solo on the album, even if sections of it sound a little overly familiar.

Well-produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Collier, 'Rebel' is close to '...Mirrors' in style and sound, but with Logan's new-found depth as a lyricist giving a more serious and less "party" vibe. It won't be for everyone but there's plenty to like here.
