Kezia have stuck a flag in the ground and announced their arrival to the Prog World in a big way.

In 2013, three old friends – keyboard player Alberto Armanini, guitarist Antonio Maneti and singer Peirlorenzo Molinari – decided to write together for the first time and so the band Kezia was born. The quintet is completed by Fabio Bellini and Michele Longhena, however the latter two did not play on this album length EP and the bass and drums were handled by Andrea Piovani and Matteo Vigani respectively.

The band cite influences from the likes of Queen, Deep Purple, Protest The Hero, Dream Theater, Faith No More, Frank Zappa and Toto and all these can be heard throughout the thirty-five minutes of what can best described as the Pop Metal of 'The Dirty Affair'. I would also add Muse to that list as any fans of the "super-group" generally or their last two albums specifically will find a lot to like here.

'Before I Leave' sets out what the band is all about with multiple time changes, riffs galore, guitar solos, multi-layered keyboards and bizarre lyrics. The synth openings of 'Ebola' soon metamorphose into a glorious fusion of Zappa and DT and, depending on your musical view-point, this is either utter nonsense or utter genius (I am of the latter opinion).
Unlikely as it is, things get just weirder with the title track, which is one of the strangest songs you are ever likely to encounter in any genre, although 'The Dirty Affair (Between Pelican & Bear)' is still an example of Progressive Rock at its most bombastic. 'Sneakers' has an almost Steely Dan intro before more or less turning into something resembling a standard Pop single, almost.

The final four tracks are all part of 'The Diebella's Method' starting with the frenetic 'Barabba Son's Song' that has an instrumental section straight out of the DT school of writing. 'Quendo Intro' continues on similar theme whilst the all too-short 'Preludio' heralds the introduction of the final song, the seven-minute plus epic of 'Treesome'.

The musicianship is phenomenal and despite more time changes than The Terminator box-set, Kezia have managed to construct songs that are both catchy and complex in the same degree. The mastering by Ricardo Frigoni has resulted in an album that sonically matches the heavyweights of the genre such as Steve Wilson and Neal Morse.

With 'The Dirty Affair', Kezia have stuck a flag in the ground and announced their arrival to the Prog World in a big way.
