One of the best bands writing and recording Prog Rock in the world today.

What a year 2015 it has been for Prog Rock. Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, Subsignal, Lonely Robot, Steven Wilson, Tiger Moth Tales, Arena – and the list goes on – have all released superb albums. And now the new Riverside is here to contend with and it's a stunner.

The band decided after their last release, that they needed to try and somewhat re-invent themselves, and so they set about writing and recording an album that harked back to their earlier, more Prog Rock-influenced albums. One of the first questions that came to my mind was what will the fans think of this back to basics new/old approach? Personally I think it works, with Riverside ditching the more Metal side of their music in favour of a more melodic feel to the songs.

In essence Riverside have made an album that has all the essential parts needed to make a Riverside album. The melancholic dark side of their music is still there, as is the superb voice of Mariusz Duda. However this time around everything, from the songs to the musicianship, has been given what I can only describe as an "almost happy" edge? And it's this edge that makes this release such and interesting and extremely good album.

Whilst not a concept offering, the album is built around themes of being lost and found, emotions we've all experienced during our lives. Duda himself says of the album – "The first track is called 'Lost', the last one 'Found'. If we sometimes get lost in life, we have to work at life and go through things, so we can be found again on the other side, to be reborn as someone better and more valuable".

These themes are then found throughout the ten songs that make up '...Machine'. Highlights (and there are many) include the stunning 'Caterpillar And The Barbed Wire' with its haunting bass refrain and hypnotic vocals; it's a song that worms its way into your mind, wrapping itself around your subconscious and staying with you long after the album has finished playing. And that's the true magic of this album, the way that all the songs (especially, 'Saturate Me', 'Towards The Blue Horizon', the plaintive 'Time Travellers' and 'Afloat') stay with you and stick in your head not wanting to leave.

I'm a long-time fan of this band and it's my opinion that this is their best work to date. The way the melodies, arrangements and production all melt together to form a whole is mesmerizing and this album will (I think) help to cement Riverside's place as one of the best bands writing and recording Prog Rock in the world today.
