Speaking for myself, this is easily my favourite Leaves' Eyes album so far.

I've always really enjoyed the albums by Leaves' Eyes and thought that in their singer Liv Kristine, they had a wonderful leading light. Yet as much as I liked their previous albums, I always felt that they had more to give, that there was an album yet to come, where all the best elements of their music would join together and explode in a whirlwind of Symphonic majesty.

'King Of Kings' is, I believe, that release and LE have a right to be incredibly proud of what they have achieved on this album. It's hard to put my finger on just why I think this offering is so good but whatever ingredient the band has been added to their music, to help make it that little bit more special, is an elusive one but believe me when I say that it has worked big time for LE.

Maybe it's the very interesting Nordic Saga they've used as inspiration for the albums lyrics. Which are based on the true events of Harald I of Norway, who tried to unite that country into a single kingdom, during the late ninth and early tenth centuries; 'King Of Kings' concentrates on the historical tale of Harald's battle of Hafrsfjord (look it up).

Using guest artists like Simone Simons (Epica) Lindy-Fay Hella (Wardruna), the London Voices Choir (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars) and the White Russian Symphony Orchestra to help them bring an almost cinematic feel to proceedings, the band use everything in their impressive arsenal to bring this story to life.

And from the start to the very end you'll find a rich vein of songs, such as 'Edge Of Steel', 'The Waking Eye', 'Vengeance Venom', the atmospheric 'Haraldskvæði' and 'Swords In Rock' that all easily nail down what is truly wonderful about Symphonic Metal.

Though the standout track on the album has to be the epic eight minutes of 'Blazing Water'; a full-on Symphonic romp with crackling guitar riffs, multi-layered choirs and full orchestration, the song gallops along with Kristine giving a stunning vocal performance which is controlled and precise one minute until she unleashes a roar that could splinter a tree into a million pieces the next.

Speaking for myself, this is easily my favourite Leaves' Eyes album so far. Everything just clicks and falls into place for me and other Symphonic Metal fans will lap this album up with glee.
